October 4, 2010 - Hot Topics

If the purpose of this column were to summarize the week-that-was, then we wouldn't have to work up a sweat to find with our topic today. The reason for this is that we worked up quite a sweat all week, dealing with the extreme heat that swallowed up our little blue town by the big blue sea like flame-breathing dragon enjoying a nice cup of black coffee in the middle of the afternoon.

It was hot. And as we found out on Monday night, the heat was not coming from the sun, but some supernatural force that found a way to turn up the oven for a midnight snack without any help from celestial bodies known to man. The Edhat Dog didn't know whether to pant or run, as the temperature that night rose 30 degrees from 9pm to midnight. Hot dog!

Of course, later in the week, the temperatures dropped, and spectacular looking clouds billowed over the mountains, just like we saw at the start of the Zaca Fire, only whiter and less threatening. After a week of wacky weather, it was far from shocking that we were treated to a spectacular lightning show on Thursday night, sprinkled with a touch of rain in some outer lying areas.

Today's Sunday Edhat includes some regular columns sprinkled with some news, photos, and conversation starters. The Non-Profit of the Week is Rotaract of Santa Barbara, a volunteer opportunity for the under-30 set. The Tourist Attraction of the Week is Coal Oil Point, a hidden gem on the far end of UCSB. The Cat of the Week, Siss, is a shy adoptee. Pasha, the Dog of the Week, has exotic lineage.

Marc Liberts tasted syrah in Santa Ynez, and Ms. Lemonjelly enjoyed bacon ice cream at Square One. Edda handles trouble involving a tortoise. And even though it's Saturday, those citizen news reports just keep on coming.

---- Edhat Stuff ----------------------------------

ASK EDDA: Dear Edda, My husband refuses to learn the difference between a turtle and a tortoise. Derek is not a turtle!

Ms. Lemonjelly went to Square One to beat the heat where, among other things, she had bacon ice cream.

CAT OF THE WEEK: This is Siss, from ResQCats. She is about five years old and is as shy as can be.

DOG OF THE WEEK: Pasha is a Turkish Akbash, which translates to "White Head." Akbashes are sheep guardian dogs that excel at protecting flocks from large predators.

NON-PROFIT OF THE WEEK: The Rotaract Club of Santa Barbara is a dynamic group of professionals age 18 to 30 interested in meeting people and volunteering.

TOURIST ATTRACTION: With history and habitat abound, Coal Oil Point Reserve is one of Santa Barbara’s natural gems.

WINE TASTING: Marc was invited to join Brander Vineyard winemaker Fred Brander, Colson Canyon Vineyard owner Rio Rieswig, and friends for a blind syrah tasting.
