ASK EDDA

Back to School
updated: Sep 04, 2010, 10:00 AM

Dear Edda,

So I rented a space for school with a roommate. My roommate's room is normal, and I am in a large closet, so we agreed to split the rent 60/40. Last July we signed a one-year lease, thinking we might rent out the place out during the summer. But, the place was empty all summer.

Now that we are back, we are discussing how to split up the lost rent. I am saying it should be 60/40 because the lost rent was just a fixed cost and the utility will be the time we are there --- he with a better room. He says it should be 50/50 because neither of us was there, and we each got the same value out of the apartment during the summer.

What you think?

Signed,

Closet Roommate

Dear Closet Roommate,

60/40?!? Whatever you do, don't let him hang his clothes in your room!

Edda
