updated: Oct 02, 2010, 9:00 AM
The Rotaract Club of Santa Barbara is a dynamic group of professionals age 18 to 30 interested in meeting people and volunteering in the community and internationally. Membership is open to people who like to socialize and participate in public service projects.
As part of Rotary, a global service organization, Santa Barbara Rotaract has the benefit of affiliation with an established group of local professionals.
About Rotaract
Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women (both students and young professionals) ages 18 to 30. Our Rotaract club is community-based, and we're sponsored by a local Rotary group. This makes us true "partners in service" and key members of the family of Rotary.
As one of Rotary's most significant and fastest-growing service programs, with more than 7,000 clubs in about 163 countries and geographical areas, Rotaract has become a worldwide phenomenon.
How does it work?
All Rotaract efforts begin at the local, grassroots level, with members addressing their communities' physical and social needs while promoting international understanding and peace through a framework of friendship and service.
What are some other opportunities available to Rotaractors?
Rotaractors also:
Assist in organizing Interact clubs or mentor Interactors
Participate in Rotary Youth Leadership Awards
Become Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholars or Group Study Exchange team members
Seek membership in their local Rotary club
Benefits of Rotaract
Service defines Rotary's character and is the basis for its appeal and visibility in the community. Service Above Self is the main philosophy that guides Rotary and Rotaract.
Community service opportunities
Each Rotaract club is required to complete at least two major service projects annually: one to benefit the community and the other to promote international understanding. The Rotaract Club of Santa Barbara typically participates in or presents at least one community service project each month, and assists in or pilots at least one international project each year.
Professional development
Our club's professional development activities expand our members' understanding of the work environment and business opportunities within their community. We highlight Rotaractors' role in the community's economic development and illustrate how skills honed through service can help resolve problems in the workplace. Each Rotaract club provides professional development opportunities through activities such as:
Special professional and vocational forums
Business-related technology updates
Management and marketing seminars
Business and professional ethics conferences
Presentations on finance and credit options for start-ups
Rotarian sponsors enhance Rotaractors' professional development by providing practical advice on entering the business world and on overcoming vocational challenges. Joint Rotaract-Rotary professional development projects help Rotaractors get better acquainted with Rotarians.
Leadership development
Our club's leadership development activities aim not only to make members more effective leaders in their personal lives but also to teach them how to develop and sustain strong clubs through projects. Our Rotaract club provides leadership development opportunities to our members through activities that:
Improve public-speaking skills
Teach techniques for marketing Rotaract to potential members
Build consensus among members
Help with delegating project responsibilities and ensuring follow-up
Identify channels for project publicity and promotion
Point out financial resources for strengthening club development
Assess project success
Additionally, clubs provide ongoing district-level leadership development opportunities to Rotaractors as we strengthen our understanding of Rotary.
