NON-PROFIT OF THE WEEK

Cancer Center of Santa Barbara
updated: Sep 11, 2010, 8:50 AM

The Cancer Center of Santa Barbara is a freestanding non-profit cancer diagnostic and treatment center that provides its patients a quality of medical care that ranks among the best on the West Coast. With a strong dedication to remain in the vanguard of cancer care through the timely acquisition of new medical equipment, the recruitment of highly trained medical personnel, the active participation in clinical research, and the thoughtful introduction of promising new treatments, the Cancer Center is committed to bringing today's best cancer care to our community.

The Cancer Center is fortunate to have a team of physicians who are not only outstanding clinicians, but who also participate in cutting-edge research. They are truly dedicated to bettering outcomes for patients of today, and in the future.

Through its strong commitment to furthering the field of cancer research and improving treatment options, the Cancer Center also provides local patients access to clinical trials. These potentially life-saving treatments are not yet available as a standard of care, and patients' participation may improve their own condition as well as help map the future of cancer care for others. The Cancer Center's Hereditary Cancer Risk Counseling Program aims to help patients and families with a history of cancer better understand and manage their cancer risk. The Cancer Center has on staff a full-time genetic counselor who offers Santa Barbara County residents the opportunity to meet confidentially, at no charge, to discuss their concerns and determine their hereditary cancer risk. Physician referrals are not required, and many insurance plans fully cover the services.

Another member of the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara's multi-disciplinary team is the Breast Cancer Patient Navigator. The Breast Cancer Patient Navigator serves as a liaison between patients and the various healthcare providers required for proper diagnosis, treatment and disease management. The Breast Cancer Patient Navigator serves as a consistent care coordinator throughout a breast cancer patient's experience, from breast health education and prevention, to diagnosis, treatment and survivorship.

In addition to providing first-class medical care, the Cancer Center is committed to helping people with the various physical, emotional, spiritual, and practical aspects of a cancer diagnosis. The Support Services and Wellness departments offer a wide range of resources for patients and family members including support groups, transportation to treatments, financial assistance, and complementary therapies such as yoga, nutrition, healing touch, and art. Patients who receive treatment at the Cancer Center often compare it favorably to facilities they have visited in larger cities. The compassionate care they experience is unmatched, and the caliber of medical teams and technology is truly unique for a community our size. The Cancer Center of Santa Barbara is proud to celebrate 60 years of cutting-edge cancer care in our community.
