Small Brushfire Burning Near Goleta
KEYT Anchor

Story Created: Aug 20, 2010 at 3:54 PM PDT

Story Updated: Aug 20, 2010 at 3:58 PM PDT
A small brushfire broke out about 3:30 along Old San Marcos Road. It has burned about two acres so far near an avocado grove. Fire officials are calling it the "Marcos Incident".

Fire officials say a transformer blew knocking down some power lines sparking the fire.

At least one structure is being threatened due north of the fire. Air support has been called in to help out ground crews.

KEY News has a crew on the way.

All week I have been checking in to see if we were still fire free in Santa Barbara. My husband would call me be assured that there was no fire news. (We had had two fires in our hills here in Baja, and one village had been saved because our three horses had provided a fire break. That was last week.and our horses were pictured in the EL Vigia)
I happened to see the Indy blip on my yahoo page and quick came to edhat for real scoop. Bless the community for being quick to alert the edhat subscribers.

The pics were reminiscent of the 1990 fire, so scary.

The "fire bombers" or air tankers were cancelled prior to arrival after the forward progress of the fire was stopped. Quick work by helos was the call. The tankers were out of Paso Robles and had a 25 minute ETA after lift-off. They obviously were cancelled when the fire was under control.

Here's county fire's news release on this incident:

At 3:36 pm, Santa Barbara County Fire Department (SBC FD) responded to a vegetation fire located at 1365 San Marcos Road in the foothills above Goleta. SBC FD was assisted by the US Forest Service, Santa Barbara City Fire Department, CHP and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department.?

First arriving units found a fire burning in light to medium brush with a moderate rate of spread. The fire burned 5 acres and one structure was threatened. There were also live power lines down in the area. A total of seven engines, one water tender, two helicopters, air attack, one dozer, three crews, one investigator, and four chief officers responded.

As of 5 pm, the fire was 60 percent contained and the forward progress of the fire was stopped. Defensible space work that was done by the homeowners just two days prior to the start of the fire contributed to saving one structure and allowed firefighters to make an aggressive and safe attack on the fire. As of 6 pm, all roads were opened and equipment was being released. Southern California Edison Company was also on scene repairing the downed live power lines. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

You people need to chill. We are all in this together when it comes to safety. First off, blogs and websites are great for instant info. So long as it is accurate and helpful. Its nice to have edhat viewers send in information. I did see keyt do a news break in within minutes of the fire breaking out. And you have to remember they do more than just web or on air they have to send PEOPLE into harms way to shoot and cover and broadcast. Big equipment into dangerous power line areas so before you "arm chair" critic artist start being mean or rude and critical, remember they are working for PEOPLES safety. They do a great job just like the firefighters and the real "public" who tries to inform and not tear down. Besides folks, the fire was tiny and in a very low populated area and response by firefighters was awesome.

COMMENT 99403 agree helpful negative off topic

2010-08-21 11:10 AM

Very low populated area?
Do you even know where the for was?

Yes I am very grateful for our firefighters- I think they are the best but, as someone who lives not more than a mile from this last fire, and has had to leave during the last fires, the last thing I'll do is chill.

COMMENT 99405 agree helpful negative off topic

2010-08-21 11:28 AM

I meant "chill" in terms of the usual criticism on this site.
I think we should applaud everyone for wanting to help give info. It is just disheartening when everyone tries to "point fingers" etc. Blogs, radio, tv - they all have different roles to play. Accuracy is crucial. Having video and live TV is crucial. On scene reports are important. It is just sad to read on this site all the time, no matter the subject, people tearing others apart and then trying to take credit for who did what, who had what first. As long as everyone does their part, we should be thankful. Share info, helpful comments. Be a part of the community, not a critic. This blog can serve people well, don't destroying it and make it a negative site. That's all I'm trying to say.

As a Painted Cave Fire burnout (and multi-time evacuee since then) I thank our firefighters for their prompt and aggressive response!

I plead with my Santa Barbara/Goleta neighbors to PLEASE stay off the roads during fires. I had (teenage) kids and animals at home alone and became VERY frustrated with the traffic at CO/SM roads as I tried to reach them. Fortunately, the police block at Via Los Santos funneled them away quickly to the right and he let me up the canyon with the ID that I knew they'd want, but I could tell that many of the folks in front of me tried to talk their way up canyon. I felt very angry at them.

I hope Edhat "reporters" are simply citizens like me who might report on what's going on around my work or home - but if they're "hobbiest reporters" who try to get to the front lines for a thrill - they should be arrested! Please stay away from emergency areas unless your OWN family or property is endangered.

thanks :)

Burying high-power lines isn't practical in mountain terrain.

If they did your electricity bill would suffer greatly and then you'd whine about that too.
