K-9 PALS
updated: Aug 28, 2010, 8:30 AM
K- 9 Placement and Assistance League, Inc. (K-9 PALS) is a non-profit, all volunteer organization that promotes dog adoptions, provides humane care, and acts as advocate for the dogs of the Santa Barbara County Animal Shelter.
The County Animal Shelter takes in an average of 1,200 stray and abandoned dogs per year. With the help of K-9 PALS, the Shelter will return more than 50% of the dogs to their owners and find homes for over 300 adoptable dogs each year.
Our 80 K-9 PALS volunteers provide more than 14,000 hours of service annually at the shelter and in the community. Volunteers provide shelter dogs with high quality daily care that includes exercising, training, and socializing, bathing, counseling for prospective adopters, assessing dog behavior, and cleaning and maintaining exercise yards and work areas. Volunteers organize and participate in fundraising events and off-site adoption awareness events.
K-9 PALS main source of revenue is donations that provide high quality medical care, pharmaceuticals, diagnostic treatments, and surgical care that would otherwise not be available for the shelter dogs.
Since December 2001, K-9 PALS has constructed several areas at the Shelter: the Visitor's Garden where prospective adopters can meet dogs for adoption, a large fully-fenced dog training area with dog agility equipment, several exercise/play yards for the dogs, and a storage building for supplies.
When you adopt a dog from K-9 PALS, you will receive a dog with:
• Full veterinary exam
• Vaccinations
• Spay or neuter surgery / sterility certificate
• Health record
• 4 FREE training sessions with a local dog trainer valued at over $400.
The adoption fee is $90, plus the cost of a County or City license, paid to the Santa Barbara County Animal Services.
A donation to K-9 PALS is separate from the adoption fee. Your tax-deductible donation to K-9 PALS goes directly towards caring for and finding homes for shelter dogs. In addition to making an unrestricted donation, you can make a donation to a specific category allocated to operations, medical, senior dogs, extraordinary medical procedures, or building.
New this year, K-9 PALS donors are able to honor their family, pets, and friends, with a customized plaque that will be displayed on a dog kennel at the Shelter. The gold-colored plaque will display up to 35 characters of the donor's choice. Donation for a one year plaque is a minimum of $100.
