DOG OF THE WEEK

Barnaby
updated: Aug 28, 2010, 9:20 AM

By David Powdrell

Barnaby, our newly acquired rescue dog, has a new water dish. But for some reason, he prefers to drink water from a big ceramic bird bath out in the garden; a bowl that sits a tad too high for him to reach. He is, after all, a basset hound.

With all his stretching might, Barnaby gets his head up onto the rim of the bird bath and starts lapping up the warm dirty water, a testament that this is, after all, HIS back yard, not the neighborhood crows yard.

As Barnaby's lapping away, he's staring blindly into the sky due to his precariously short legs.

While photographing from afar, I'm struck by the fact that dogs (cats too, I believe) pull the water up with the back of their tongues, not the top of their tongues as we might think. Reminds me of a George Carlin joke about what chairs might look like if our knees bent forward instead of backwards.

Anyways, just for a little sense of levity for your day, here are a few pics of our lovable new Barnaby at his favorite watering hole demonstrating his daily drinking habit for you.
