Five days a year I have the distinct honor of photographing the most amazing young athletes, kids ages 5-19. They're all wheelchair bound. It's the annual Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp held at UCSB.
They play tennis, climb the rock wall, kayak, scuba dive, do a ropes course, play basketball, swim, use hand cycles, play racquetball and try their hand at rugby and hockey. I'm exhausted just watching them compete.
The most important thing, though, is that I have never seen so many grateful, happy kids as when I'm at this camp. I love their view of the world and their sense of wonder and appreciation.
If you're anywhere near UCSB this week, stop by and watch the magic. But be very careful; it's addictive being around these amazing kids.
The event is sponsored by Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital, Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation, UCSB and lots of generous community businesses and individuals.
Attached are a few photos that I hope capture a piece of it.
