Buster

This is Buster Brown (next to his younger and very hyper little sister, Mattie.) Buster was our first "family dog," by that I mean he was my four-legged brother (the four-legs distinguished him from my human brother). Even though he got us all in a lot of trouble one time or another, he was very special and always loved.
We know that no dog can be as loyal, caring, protective or gentle as Buster, so losing him this past week was very tough, especially for his best friend and defender (or enabler) of bad behavior, my mom.
We knew Buster was a special dog because when we first met him, he walked into the house, relieved himself, then turned around and walked out. With his big floppy ears and large clumsy puppy paws, (and obvious bad manners), we knew he would fit right in. His alpha-dog tendencies often got us all in trouble, but "Hit-and-Run" was our favorite nickname for him, as he would gently walk up to my toddler nieces and nephews, kiss (dog lick) them on the face and then run away as they toppled over.
He was most loyal to my mom, always willing to give a ferocious sounding bark anytime a stranger was at the door and cuddle up with her at night. And being the perennial judge of character, even Buster didn't like my ex-boyfriend. I should have followed the dog's intuition.
Buster developed some serious health problems this past month and we had to very reluctantly send him doggie-heaven. My mom of course is taking it very hard, so any words of pet-wisdom are welcomed at this time. Maybe I didn't realize it until now, but our pets really are our best friends.

Oh, I am so sorry. Give your mom a big bear hug for me. I know the pain of losing a loyal friend and from my experience you just have to sit with the grief.

Knowing that the animal is no longer suffering helps deal with the loss, but I admit that I still dream about long-gone pets. As Buster Brown enriched your lives, I'm sure you and your family enriched his.

So sorry for your loss. I've been through many cats and a couple of dogs, but it's never easier. Hug your mom for me.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I lost my 12.5 year old boxer back in May, and miss him terribly. Boxers are the best! Sounds like yours had a great home!

So tough losing one of our family members - we feel your sorrow having also suffered losses. We are heartened in knowing that they never really leave us, though. They remain in our hearts for the rest of our lives. Big hugs to all of you, and a bravo to Buster for having given back as much as you all obviously gave to him.

Hooray to you for having uncropped boxers. They are wonderful dogs who should not have to go through amputations to win our favor. I also lost a pet of many years recently so I know that empty feeling when no one greets you at the door-or you roll over to no warm spot on the bed. Keep thinking os all the warm and funny things you shared. It does not go away but hurts less in time.
