Dog Lover

Dear Edda,
My wife and I have a dog who is a member of our family. He eats with us and sleeps in our bed, and pretty much has the run of the house, just like any member of the family would. When we go to work, we leave the TV on for company, so he has developed the habit of watching from the couch. We would rather he didn't, because he sheds a lot, but it's not fair to limit his sitting on the couch only when we aren't home.
My brother has a very repressed dog. He is not allowed at the table or on the bed (or even in certain rooms of the house!). When my brother and his wife go to work, they leave their dog outside alone.
The trouble is that when we go to my brother's house, he insists that our dog not go in the kitchen or sit on the couch, and he doesn't like when we put our dinner plates on the floor for our dog to finish. He says it's his house and it's also not fair to his dog when another dog comes in and doesn't have to obey the same rules.
By the way, my brother and his wife have a daughter, and we let her sit on our couch!
Who is right, me or my brother?
Signed,
Dog Lover
