I Madonnari

For me, a guy with absolutely no artistic skills, the thought that someone could possibly create masterpiece-quality art with only colored chalk and a huge slab of bumpy, cracked pavement is downright incredible. I'm also always drawn to the artists themselves; grown men and women as well as children who, for a week-end, get down and dirty creating nothing less than pure magic. The stories of how and why they chose their pieces and the artists individual backgrounds intrigue me.
Although technically the festival doesn't start until Saturday, a few of the artists got an early start.
I was drawn to the texture and colors of the artist's hands today. If I ever learn to draw with chalk and enter the festival, I want to draw a picture of an I Madonnari artists' chalk-laden hands.
Hope you enjoy the pics and hope I see you out there this week-end.
