At this evening's meeting of the Santa Barbara School Districts' Board of Education, the board voted 5:0 to ratify the selection of Abby Vasquez as the new head teacher/administrative designee of the Santa Barbara Community Academy.
Ms. Vasquez began her service in education as an elementary school teacher in Garden Grove and, from 1997-2007, she taught grades 2-5 at Franklin School in the Santa Barbara Elementary School District. Her leadership experience includes serving as a teacher on special assignment, curriculum facilitator, teacher in charge, Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment (BTSA) trainer and documenter, and member of Franklin's School Site Council. Her administrative experience includes serving as Franklin School's interim principal, summer school principal in the Goleta Union School District, and interim administrator of the Santa Barbara Community Academy.
As the interim administrator of the Santa Barbara Community Academy since January 2010, Ms. Vasquez has been responsible for all functions of the school, from student learning and safety to evaluation and supervision of staff. She worked with the Site Council to write and implement the school's Single Plan for Student Achievement as well as the Safe and Healthy School Plan.
Ms. Vasquez earned a master's degree and preliminary administrative services credential at Cal Lutheran. She earned a multiple subject credential from California University at Northridge and bachelor's degree in child development at California University at Northridge.
She said, "Over the past four months I have been serving as the interim administrator at the Academy. During that time I have come to appreciate the devoted students, teachers, and families that make up this school. It is truly a gem. One of my goals is to shine a light on the many facets that make the Academy special, from rigorous academics to high parent involvement, all built on a solid foundation in Core Knowledge curriculum. I am thrilled to be chosen to help guide this school to continued success."
Ms. Vasquez will begin her new position on July 1.
The Santa Barbara Community Academy is located at 850 Portesuello Road, Santa Barbara, 93101. The Academy serves 270 children in grades K-6. The school begins its year round calendar on July 15, 2010.
