DOG OF THE WEEK

Max
updated: Jun 26, 2010, 9:10 AM

His name is Max. February 10th will be 14 years ago that I found him in the middle of the Mojave desert. Unfortunately, it's pretty common for people to dump animals out there. He was sitting in the middle of a dirt road with his head on his front paws and he didn't want to move. Little did I know, I was about to pick up my best friend for several years to follow!

After convincing my father to let me keep him (I was 17 at the time and always bringing home wild animals), Max had no problems fitting in with the family. He was such a good dog and no training was necessary. He just knew what to do! When I left the desert for the city, I thought it would be better for Max to stay with my dad on our small ranch. I mean after all, how could I take him from several acres to a small apartment??? Luckily for me, Max was very upset. My dad said he would lay all day by our gate and refused to eat. In the evenings my dad would have to pick him up and bring him into the house, where he would then lay all night by the front door. I would visit on the weekends, but my dad said it wasn't enough (which is exactly what I wanted to hear!). So I brought him home to my apartment.

Fourteen years later, Max is still by my side!!! He has had some health issues over the years, but fortunately I have an amazing veterinarian (Dr Steve Aboulafia in Studio City, CA) and an awesome medical herbalist (Amanda McQuade Crawford, Dip. Phyto., MNIMH, RH (AHG), MNZAMH) who works well with Max's needs. He has been all over California (especially the coast) and in a few other states. He comes everywhere with me! We do a lot of walking (he likes the walks on Butterfly beach best where he gets to lay on the sand afterwards and people watch) and hanging out with lots of friends and family. If I go to a surf spot with little people, Max goes too and waits for me. If I'm at my martial arts classes, Max is allowed to come. Friends know if they invite me, Max gets an invitation! Even my dentist insists I bring Max so she can see him! Friends ask how Max is doing before they ask me. Whether it's because of his loving eyes, laid back demeanor, fashion sense or colorful mohawks, Max has something everyone loves.
