Matilija Poppy
updated: May 17, 2010, 3:44 PM

By David Powdrell

I'm always captivated by the beautiful but unusual looking California native, the Matilija Poppy. Fried eggs in a flower form. I think it's a case of Mother Nature messing with us.

Evidently, the Chumash Indians used the plant to treat skin and gum disease, as well as gastrointestinal pain.

Here are a few backyard photos of the Matilija Poppies blowing in the wind. A little something for you Bob Dylan fans.

For those interested in learning more about the flower, see: link or link

I also love this flower but don't plant it near anything else. It is highly invasive and sends deep 'roots' in every direction. It's difficult to kill once it gets established. Also, after it blooms, it dries out and could become a hazard in a high-fire area.
