Pelicans are Surfers Too
updated: May 10, 2010, 12:00 AM
By David Powdrell
Here's my premise: Pelicans are surfers reincarnated. Or surfers are pelicans reincarnated. Either way, I feel confident that their souls are kindred.
Here's the deal: My wife and I took a low-tide hike from Carpinteria to Rincon Sunday. As we're hiking, the wind continues to build. No surfers are in the water and the winds are gale force, 40 knot plus. As our hike concludes back at the Carpinteria Bluffs, I take perch and start snapping photos of the pelicans and seagulls slowly and painstakingly working their way north towards Santa Barbara. In strong winds and sitting on the bluff at their level, they move very slowly in front of me, which allows the camera lens more focus time.
As difficult as the flight is, however, the birds glide down to ride the swells of the unbroken waves, occasionally dive for some supper and generally make the task at hand look easy.
I hope you enjoy taking a look at the kindred souls of surfers, the pelicans, and a few stray seagulls flying in gale force winds today.

Beautiful pictures David. I spent a bit more time watching the pelicans flying this morning! They really are amazing and graceful. Thanks for the refreshing take on things!
