Toyota of SB is the worst dealership I have ever visited...I regularly drive the 40 miles to Oxnard for service without a sneer. For a simple smog check, try Caseys...it's a lesson in multiculturalism, but their coupons can't be beat.

Check for discount coupons in local publications/maiings, and in those phone books that someone was griping about a day or two ago. Call and ask the price before you go, get the name of the person who gave you the price. I was quoted one price on the phone and the estimator gave me a higher one when I arrived. I got the lower one. This was at Smog-it. Smog-it was $65 minus a coupon that was suppose to be 10%, but they rounded it down to $5, so it was $60.

I am going to have to add a third recommendation for GM Auto & Smog. They have done two or three smog checks for us as well as assorted other work and we've been happy every time. Fair, honest, and friendly. Don't think they can fit an RV in their little shop, but I would call them and see who they recommend.

You can get a coupon which might reduce the price a few dollars, but the going rate in all of SB is $65. If you have a car that you think might not pass smog, the smartest thing to do is find a deal where the smog station will do a re-test for free. You can find this type of deal in the SB Axxess book. Otherwise, if you fail smog, after you correct the car you will have to pay an extra $65.

It's amazing how the price of this test has escalated so much in the pat 2-3 years. My last one, 2 years ago, was $45 out the door. I'm sure all test stations talk and then set the price, which seems unfair. I know in the S.Y. Valley, some years back, the few people who did these state tests, would have a meeting, then amazingly, all would be within $3 - $5 of each other. Hmmmm This whole thing has always seemed suspect to me. Talk about having everybody by the neck and virtually no competition - anywhere! Ever wonder if this might be a ripe case for price fixing? I sure have, like every time I have to smog a vehicle! Boo

Just in case you were wondering, the state had a huge sting operation recently, and they caught a bunch of people faking smog results for cash. This is fresh in smog center's minds, so unless you REALLY know someone, you will have a hard time finding someone willing to pass you for a little extra cash.

74528 Sorry you have had a bad experience at Toyota. I have gone there with my 1984 Toyota for 26 years and I have been generally pleased with their service. Over the years there have been many changes but some of the old people are still there, and the new people are very kind.

Not all smog testers are honest. I went to one several years ago that failed to get the engine hot enough and the vehicle failed. Without any repairs I took it to another tester and it passed easily. I now take my vehicles to Mireles Auto Repair. They are honest and reliable.

Just got mine at Santa Barbara Smog Shop?, 601 East Gutierrez Street, SB about 2 weeks ago. Ricardo, the owner, is real informative and friendly. Place doesn't look like much but it was only $50. No fancy website or advertising so guess it helps keep his price lower. Best to call for appointment, but I stopped by at about 2:30 and he had me out of there in about 15 minutes.

I do mine at Union 76 on Fairview and my latest was last month for $56 w/o coupon, I think they have a $5 or $10 coupon in the phonebook. I like the guys there, very easy to work with. I've also had success at Smog It on Haley. I have heard very bad things about Casey's Garage in Goleta and warn everyone I can about that place.

"Failed to get the car hot enough to pass the test"? They are supposed to do that? I was taught that you need to drive your car for about a half hour on the freeway before taking it in for your test.... good advice everybody! (Avoid Perry dealership - they are the worst at repairs - and treat women like dirt.)

After reading all the posts here and calling numerous places, I have concluded GM Auto is the best deal by far. $49 out the door including the electronic transmission to Sacramento. The Santa Ynez Valley ranges from $60 to $78. OUCH! Talk about gouging. Guess they feel they can get away with it, and sadly, they do. Boo

RURALWANNABE, good advice. If you are worried about your car passing the smog test, make sure you have clean oil in the engine, and your air filter isn't crusty. Drive your car on the freeway for at least 10 minutes right before taking it in.

Took my Volvo V70 to GM Auto on Alamar to see Andy & Mary today (5-10-10) and was in and out in 17 minutes flat for $49. Super-friendly people and great service. Andy really knows his stuff about smogging all vehicles and also does first rate car repairs too. They even have a very comfy waiting area with loads of reading material & plenty of Santa Barbara related pictures, etc. to keep you busy for the short period of time Andy takes to work his magic.

To: RUNS FROM LIONS GM Auto sure does smog & work on all RV's and even HUGE trucks. How can they do that at their "tiny shop?" Easy. Andy was one smart guy when they purchased all that expensive smog equipment and positioned it at the very edge of the service bay doors. This makes it super-easy to pull up any sized vehicle outside and the test equipment easily reaches to the necessary parts of the vehicle. Why drive to Lompoc! Heck, get it done right here in S.B. at GM Auto from now on.

GM Auto and Smog is hands down the best place I've been to. I've been to Smog It many times. It seems that they are large enough to handle the few people that are often there before me, but I always seem to have to wait. And, they just move slowly. I arrived at GM Auto and Smog prepared to wait an hour. But, they had me pull right in to the test bed. They then tested my car and my wife's car almost simultaneously. We were both done in 15 minutes for $49 each out the door. I like that it run by a husband and wife and their extended family works there. I think that makes them care more. Go to GM Auto and Smog, you will not regret it. Just call for an appt.
