Nugget in the Good Land

The second Nugget opened in Goleta last December, at 5685 Calle Real, which must have provided some relief to those who found the original too unbearably far away in Summerland. And with the construction work around 101 and Milpas on top of the existing freeway bottleneck, I don't blame them.
I think it's a great addition to Goleta restaurants, being comfortable, unpretentious, affordable and local. There are a few menu and bar items unique to this Nugget, but for the most part the menu is carried over from the Summerland Nugget.
The best value items are on a special menu, and one of the offers is beef stroganoff. I have a small list going of places in town offering this dish and thought the Nugget would be a good start, especially after a staff member said this was one of the restaurant's top crowd pleasers on an earlier visit.
It costs $9, with no other filler dishes on the side. The beef is chunky, ample, and tender. No complaints about the noodles either. I did find that the sauce was thin when the dish came fresh to the table, but over the course of dining the noodles absorbed the liquid and the sauce thickened. Only half the dish was actually consumed, and the sauce in the leftover meal a day later was perfect.
My table also ordered the pulled pork sandwich, served on a soft burger bun with BBQ sauce and coleslaw inside. This dish included a side portion of starch and I got the French fries. It also cost under $10. Considering the addition of BBQ sauce and coleslaw, the bun doesn't quite have the structure to handle it, plus my sandwich was overflowing with pork, so I recommend clearing some fries off the plate, and splitting the sandwich out into an open-face. There's enough pulled pork to divide out between the two bun halves.
This menu doesn't differ between lunch and dinner, it's all the same price, and so it's a great option for a dinner out if you're on a budget. The atmosphere is warm and family-friendly, decorated like a hunting lodge, and you feel like you're truly in a restaurant compared to the fast food and chain options along the Calle Real shopping area.
I mentioned that "the Good Land's" Nugget has a few items that the Summerland Nugget does not. According to them, the ribs are one such item ($20, big portion!), and in the bar it's the Mudslide cocktail. Think of it as a milkshake for adults. It might offer the right kick to bring some oldies back to their younger - but over 21 - days. ;) I'm thinking it would be a great cocktail to share after hitting up the Drive-In this weekend.
