La Colmena

La Colmena is one of two new favorites of mine in the Milpas area. I first sampled their tacos last September when they catered a friend's birthday party. They brought an interesting grilling setup - a large metal table with a raised, domed portion in the middle, and heat all throughout underneath. They pressed fresh tortillas on site, and toasted them on the dome while keeping all the taco fillings hot on the flat portions of the table.
They assembled tacos to order - pork, beef and chicken - handed over the plate and we were free to dress them up with a variety of salsas, cilantro, onion, guacamole and lots of limes. That was good stuff, and the birthday gang ate up the whole lot.
Their restaurant space is located at 217 Milpas, just below E.Montecito St. where Pavlako's and Cajun Kitchen used to be. You may recall that it's a quirky shape due to the triangular block - small, but long and narrow. It is definitely a no-frills environment with very little ambiance other than a wall-mounted TV showing Mexican comedies, music videos or soap operas...perhaps all at once if you're lucky. You can sit at the long bar, or at one of the plastic tables.
It's pretty much just tacos - about a dozen different fillings, and just $1.50 each, including a freshly made tortilla. My explorations of the taquerias have shown that, on average, tacos with the fresh tortillas are in the $3 range, while $1.50 tacos have a factory-made tortilla. La Colmena is a treat, because you get the good tortilla and the low price! In fact, they offer a happy hour special, where the tacos are $1 each!
However, I can't say for sure when it is - weekdays, 2-4 pm? Or 4-6 pm? Any way I look at it, I'm more than satisfied with their regular price of $1.50.
My favorite taco is the rajas, with grilled chiles and cheese. On weekends they serve tacos de canasta. These are lightly pan fried and served folded. There is less filling in them, and they cost $1 each. The fillings are also different to the tacos, like chicken mole, beans, or potato. I like the chicken mole and potato ones.
The tacos come undressed, and you can add whatever toppings you want at their salsa bar.
Other notes:
• Lengua is chopped, rather than shredded.
• They serve Mexican coke. No HFCS here.
• Cash only!
