Graffy on County General Hospital
updated: Mar 25, 2010, 9:09 AM

By Neal Graffy XNGH

Re: The question today about the General Hospital.

Back in 1932 when this picture was taken, Santa Barbara County General Hospital was located at "San Antonio Road, 3 miles west of city." As Calle Real didn't exist the entrance was from Hollister and thus, as one reader noted, you passed through the Goleta Cemetery to get to the hospital.

From a Google Earth view today. It was framed by Calle Real, San Antonio Road, and the aptly named Camino del Remedio (Way of the Remedy). The latter street name coming in around the 1970s as the hospital was converted to various health care services.

Here's a few of the happy, smiling staff in 1932. No idea who they were.

Your inquiring reader should start with Mike Redmon at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum for photos and information about the hospital.

SKOOBY agree helpful negative off topic

Over the years, I've wondered why something so desperately needed like General Hospital was closed. I remember going there as a small child in the late 40s with my father, a doctor in SB. I'd wait in their big (or so it seemed to me then) lobby watching the fascinating collection of people or reading my books while he and many other physicians from Cottage and St. Francis donated their time at the hospital. How much we need that today instead of overwhelming our local clinics and the ER.
