ASK EDDA

Invited To Dinner
updated: Mar 20, 2010, 10:00 AM

Dear Edda,

My wife's family is full of crazy people. Her dad thinks the moon landing was faked. Her mom walks around the house in her underwear. Her uncle is practically deaf and likes the TV up really loud. And, her sisters all married republicans.

Next week is her father's 73rd birthday, and they invited us for dinner in LA at some exotic restaurant. All her relatives will be there. I don't want to go. I really don't want to go. Do I have to go?

Signed,
Not Going Unless You Say I Have To

----

Dear Not,

Well, first of all, you know what I'm going to tell you - you have to go. Sorry. Remember the better or worst part? They ALL married republicans?!?

But maybe you can make it fun. You say exotic restaurant, but you don't specify. So I recommend you make it thematic. For instance: Do you own a grass skirt? A lei? A coconut shell bikini top (trust me, they look better on men)? There's a great little shop down on lower State Street. Go crazy - over the top, as they say. Who knows? Maybe you won't get invited next time!

Dear Edda,

My roommate, Alex (not his real name) and I have an ongoing argument and we are looking for someone to break the tie.

Alex says that the proper way to make banana pancakes is to make normal pancakes and then put sliced bananas on top of them before they are served.

I think that the proper way to make banana pancakes is to mix mushed bananas into the batter.

Alex's girlfriend admits that the bananas should go into the batter, but she thinks that it is okay for them to be sliced.

What do you think?

Signed,
Going Bananas

----

Dear Bananas,

How can you even live with someone who thinks that? It's just crazy! What Alex is making is pancakes with bananas, not banana pancakes. That he would even try to argue his point troubles me. Does he believe in the Easter Bunny? Does he put Splenda in his brisket? Get out. Find a new place to live with a roommate who knows how to cook. Alex could be dangerous.

Maybe you can remain friends with his girlfriend, but only meet for coffee in public places. And stick to sensible topics like politics and waffles.
