updated: Mar 18, 2010, 12:26 PM

Fess Parker, who played Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone and owned local wine and resort properties, has died of natural causes, a rep confirms. He was 85 years old.

Here is a link to Parker's personal bio from his hotel webpage.

And here is the report of his death from a celebrity website. The story broke on Twitter this morning.

Here is a link to the LA Times obit. And from the Santa Maria Times, Daily Sound, CNN and KEYT.

If you have memories or stories about Mr. Parker, who made his home in the Santa Ynez Valley for decades, please share them in the comments section. Condolences to his family and friends.

The news might account for the helicopter activity I'm hearing today, possibly from SB to SY.

I learned a lot about values from Fess Parker in his 1950's role as Davy Crockett and he made me want to emulate those lessons. When I met him later here in Santa Barbara, I was impressed with his own personal value set--he was a pretty great guy. We need more role models like him for the youth of today to admire. RIP Fess, and thanks for the memories and lifetime lessons!

This is so sad. We have lost a really nice man. Fess and I would have coffee in Los Olivos and discuss the Santa Gertrudis breed of cattle. By coincidence my family sold our herd of Santa Gertrudis to Winthrop Rockefeller at the Winerock Ranch in Arkansas and later Fess bought them from Mr. Rockerfeller. So, we had plenty to chat about. He was genuinely interested in anybody that would approach him to say hello. It would take us 15 minutes to walk form the post office in Los Olivos to the Fess Parker Inn.
I brought our local Porsche club to lunch at the Inn and Fess joined us and thrilled the members with his presence. He was sad that he never was able to fit in a Porsche. I think he was 6'5" tall.
I will miss him.
