Delivery Service
updated: Mar 18, 2010, 10:12 AM
I want to buy a washer and dryer from Sears today (today is the last day of a sale), but this one
model I want to buy only has the floor model available, so I have to haul it from the store. Do you know of a local
business who will deliver and install a washer & gas dryer?

The Factory, in Carp. They are surprisingly competitive. (I have no relationship to them.)

A-1 Appliance Repair has helped me install a dryer in the past, repaired my washer, and I'm guessing they could haul too, since they deliver their refurbished machines to people. They are located in the funk zone area in Santa Barbara.

I think Pacific Sales in Goleta does that.

Thanks so much! My problem is that Sears is having a sale on washers & dryers that ends today. And yesterday a salesperson told me that because the warehouse was out of stock of the set I wanted, I could purchase their floor model. But they told me they wouldn't deliver or install it because it's a floor model (which is odd and turns out is wrong information). They said I would have to find someone to pick up, deliver and install it—they didn’t know any local people who do that. I fruitlessly looked for my own local deliverer and installer, hence asking Ed's viewers' advice. I went back in the store this morning, because I learned that Sears regularly uses local deliverers and installers, so yesterday's sales person was incorrect in telling me I'd have to haul it away myself. I thought I was making progress. But it turns out that while they can deliver it, they can't sell me the floor model! So I asked why is it still on the floor with a sell price if they can't sell it? They said because the sale was while “Supplies last.” Which is logical to me, but since there are no supplies left, why do they advertise that it’s for sale? Then they said that maybe we can substitute it for a different brand and honor the sale price. I thought that might work. And then they said no and rejected their own suggestion. Then they said they would honor this sale price and do a rain check, which is nice, but they have no idea when it will be restocked or if it's still in production. In case you are wondering, you can find me at Costco this afternoon; they deliver their washers & dryers hassle free.

What a pain in the rear! Best luck getting your new washer and dryer. Sears is the worst sometimes. Our oven was hit-or-miss on the fritz for months, then just two weeks before Thanksgiving (and we were hosting of course) decided to call it quits. I went to Sears first, and I picked out a new oven and they quoted me a price and said it would be delivered to SB in 2 days. I went home to do some more research but it was what I wanted at a good price, so I went back the next day and spoke to a different salesperson. That person went thru the entire order, until I was about to hand over my credit card, and they said, "OK, your delivery will be on December x." Well, my money and my business went out the door. Luckily I was able to find the replacement circuit board I needed and repair my existing oven for fraction of the cost of buying new. Stupid Sears!

Classic bait & switch maneuver. Get you all excited about the price, then you commit (in your mind) to buy, only to find out you can't have it..."but we have this other model available..." If I were you I would never walk into Sears again. And make sure you email the folks at Sears that you won't ever go there again.

Catch 22 at Sears? They used to be so reliable. The passing of an era.

When Sears started outsourcing the delivery and sending random subbed out disgruntled strangers that try to do the minimum it was over for them.

Doesn't Appliance Warehouse sell only used machines? I know that when Sears used to (about 10 years ago) sell a new machine and take the old one out, they would send it to Appliance Warehouse. ...I stopped by A.W. a couple of months ago and was not really impressed by the quality of the stuff.

The Factory. Also, they will match prices so you can get the lower chain cost but still support a local business.

Some of the local appliance stores will match a Sears price if you mention that you found a lower price there. Always worth asking and that way you buy locally and support small business.

I bought my set at sears. Pulled up to the back of the place. The guys helped me load the set into my pick up. I asked a friend to help me get them to my patio. Read the directions and installed them myself. I did call my Mom's gentleman friend a twice (they live out of state) to help me when I came across a step I wanted to double check and wa la. They work perfectly. No leaks. Ask a friend to borrow their truck. Make friends.

Beware of Costco for the washer and dryer.... I bought the Whirlpool Duet Sport and I absolutely HATE them both. My utilities have actually gone up since getting them. The dryer takes forever to dry and the washer is extremely noisey. The clothes don't get clean and I had a major repair on the washer within 3 months. I told the repair guy the dryer wasn't working very well, and when he ran the diagnostics, there were problems with that also. Do your research before buying. Good luck!! Next time, I'm getting the Electrolux or Bosch
