Last Wednesday, February 27, Opera Santa Barbara lost a dear friend and Board Member, Christopher Carroll.

Christopher was born in Stratford Upon Avon in England and relocated to the United States in 1965. He originally settled in Los Angeles, then New York, until finally making his way to Santa Barbara in 1975.

Christopher held a deep love for opera and dance, and he dedicated a formidable amount of his time to the local arts community. At the time of his death, he was an active member of the Board of Directors of Opera Santa Barbara and the State Street Ballet. He was also a former board member of the Montecito YMCA, past president and current member of the Montecito Rotary Club, a Council Member at the Music Academy of the West and a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

Opera Santa Barbara holds fond memories of Christopher's appearances as a "super" in some of our productions. Most notable was his role as the deceased Buoso Donati in our 2006 production of Gianni Schicchi. This was an opportunity Christopher cherished deeply.

Christopher was also an avid athlete, and could often be seen in the waters off Butterfly Beach, where he swam with his dogs year-round. He is survived by his dog Buoso, who has found a new home with his breeders who also have Buoso's brother.

Christopher's legacy will live on in Santa Barbara due to his generous commitment to many organizations and causes in our community. His elegance, passion and keen spirit will be deeply missed.

Services will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on March 11 at 1pm.
