Local Activities
updated: Dec 17, 2009, 11:13 AM
I'm taking some time off around the holidays. I'm looking for suggestions for Santa Barbara area things to do -
preferably free. I'm happy to report that I won some tickets to the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum on Edhat.
Thanks!
Any readers have suggestions of favorite local destinations or activities?

Go out after 10:00 pm on a Monday-Thursday evening and drive up State St., starting at the wharf. The Christmas lights are truly magical, and they really stand out when there is hardly any traffic on the road.

Go to the Historical Society Museum , Big Caliente hot springs, Take self guided tours through the back country roads- Not free but still nice to take a drive to Cuyama or the Carrizo plain. Walking around the hidden stairs on the other side of Franchesci park Volunteer your body to someone trying to get their massage license and get a massage for free! Have a garage sale and get rid of a bunch of stuff

Take a walk on Butterfly Beach. You can start at east beach (you have to pay for parking and they have great banana pancakes at the East Beach Grill.) At low tide walk east, toward L.A. You will pass beneath Ty Warner's bluff home, the Biltmore Hotel (stop in and stroll the beautiful gardens), the Coral Casino, Sea Meadows, developed by Warren Buffets biz partner Charlie Munger, then onward to the Miramar Beach cottages and to the end of Fernald point. If you go in the early morning you might see dolphin, and in the evening you might catch a fabulous sunset as you head home. You can pack a picnic and have wine on Miramar Beach -- alcohol is OK. This trek sounds like such a good plan I might have to join you!

Thanks for all the good suggestions, guys. I didn't even know about the stairway at Fran. Pk. and I've lived in SB for 40 yrs! I like to go up to Refugio St. Beach for a day of bird watching.Take a lunch. The dogs at Hendry's Beach are fun to watch. Get a trail map and begin exploring our foothills, no smoking of course. The Botanic Garden is always interesting. Watch the hang gliders at Elings Park on the week ends. Volunteer at the Humane Society or Animal Control walking dogs. The harbor is always a bustling place to be. Walk Goleta Beach toward UCSB. The Karpels' Manuscript Libray fascinates some folks. Stroll Alice Keck park.
