Monroe Elementary receives fitness award
updated: Sep 18, 2009, 1:17 PM

Submitted to Edhat

Schools are chosen based on how well their programs motivate and inspire children to engage in physical activity and stay fit.

The awards were sponsored by the Anthem Blue Cross Foundation which has granted almost two million dollars to the Council within the last five years. Council Chairman Jake Steinfeld of Anthem said “We’re proud to shine a spotlight on each of our awardees because they are doing something amazing to help California’s children.”

The Centers for Disease Control recommends that children participate in one hour of physical fitness every day including aerobic activity, muscle strengthening and bone strengthening. The CDC suggests that parents and adults set positive examples of healthy activity, incorporate physical fitness into a daily routine and make exercise fun with both structured and non-structured activities.

Cricket Wood, President of the Monroe PTA Executive Board states “This is a wonderful achievement and the PTA should be proud of all that they have done in supporting Monroe students and their families.” The PE specialist at Monroe, Laura Wallace, is entirely funded by the PTA; as a result the children benefit from track and drill team programs as well as the annual Jog-a-Thon. In addition, Wood says “Since the Monroe PTA hired our PE coach, Laura Wallace, our children’s California State physical education test scores have improved tremendously.”
