I just emailed the photos to edhat. My father watched the crash happen and then ran home to grab to camera. Airplane landed on a vehicle. Not sure of any injuries.

How in the world could this happen? The 101 is going to be a nightmare.

Is the freeway closed in both directions?

I came upon this going northbound about 45 minutes ago. They had closed the on-ramp at Patterson, and it looked like they closed the southbound freeway at least at Fairview, if not farther back.

Copied from Craigslist: Santa Barbara County Fire Officials say a small plane made an emregency landing on the southbound lanes of Highway 101 between Turnpike and Patterson just after 10:30 this morning. Officials say the plane made contact with 2 vehicles on the ground. Two poeple were reportedly in the plane, and three total were in the 2 vehicles. Offiicals say one person in a vehicle suffered minor injuries. They say no one on board the plane was injured. KEY News has a crew on scene, and we will have more on this developing story tonight at 6 and 11.

I heard it cutting out over Earl Warren earlier. Went outside and could hear it trying to restart engine. Thought it was high enough to glide into airport. Obviously not. Hope all is well.

We were going northbound we saw a small plane flying very low. As the plane was flying it looked like it was in trouble because it was wavering in the air and obviously unsteady. Then as we crossed the Turnpike overpass we almost crashed from the shock of viewing the plane crash onto the freeway.

I was just on Hollister at Walnut. I saw the plane on a flatbed tow truck with police escort. They were heading towards the airport.

All 101 Southbound is locked up near Patterson as far as the eye could see. Everyone seems to have taken to Hollister.

I was on 101 @ 11:30ish. Nothing on the local stations, did not KEYT text alert, nor was there any info CHP web site (via blkbry). Finally got off on Turnpike, fire truck blocking on-ramp. Heard nothing til I got to a computer and read about here!!! Very frustrating that our local media outlets cannot help us when we're on the road.

Is the 101 clear now North and south?

I wonder if the freeway webcams caught the event. They'd be a good place to check current traffic.

Here's a webcam link but it doesn't open in my browser so I don't use it. The link ends in asx, so it just goes to download: http://video.dot.ca.gov/asx/D5-Patterson-Ave-at-101.asx

I got it to work using the free VLC open source viewer. Traffic is flowing normally both ways on the Patterson webcam looking southbound.

Wow...Glad no one got hurt that bad...I heard those sirens at church and thought I left my eggs burning.

Why was this not on the CHP site????? I checked at 11:05 And again at approx 11:2x with nothing there.

Lots of details on gNews now. It even shows up on FlightAware.com from just after takeoff in French Valley until it was past LA. Traffic sure was a mess today, between that incident and the two on Hwy.154. Coming northbound this evening it was stopped all the way to La Cumbre southbound.

They cleared this accident up very fast. I drove north on the 101 at 12:30pm and it had already been cleared.

 COMMENT 35081

that's what I would call a good landing! seriously. If you can emergency land on a freeway and no one gets hurt and the plane still looks to be in one piece, good job, whoever was flying!

 COMMENT 35108

The pilot apparently ran out of fuel! There is NO excuse for that!!!!

It will be interesting to read the final NTSB report, and it's nearly impossible not to guess until then.

Hey Ed, since this plane crash was covered on the national news, does that mean we need to delete this story?
