On Private Land
updated: Jul 14, 2009, 10:12 PM
I saw a SB motorcycle cop with a radar gun, hiding in a private driveway on De La Vina and Valerio. I thought it was illegal for cops to give speeding tickets if they are in a private driveway/land. Is that just an old rumor?

Agreed...he's looking at traffic on the 101, while folks are accelerating around a curve behind him. I guess ticket revenue is more important that officer safety even.

I think it's a matter of time until the motorcycle CHP officer gets hit that hides behind the sign where the northbound Patterson on ramp meets the 101. He's just off of the shoulder of the on ramp, and Ive seen cars in front of me accelerating to get on the101 get spooked when they see him and slam on their brakes.

More dangerous is the recent practice of the local CHP to stop along 101 with the officer outside the CHP car on the road side of the highway aiming a new type of instant on radar at selected cars. The officer then gets into the car and aggressively enters the highway with lights flashing and runs down his/her prey. All of this cannot be safe.

Yes, I used to be woken up by a motorcycle cop that would park in the driveway at 1725 De La Vina in order to monitor speeds. Quite annoying, didn't know we could object.

Yes, it's legal. They have to move to a different spot if the property owner objects, but that doesn't invalidate any tickets they write.
