Suspect Arrested for Siphoning Fuel From Truck
updated: Mar 18, 2017, 7:00 PM

Source: Santa Barbara County Deputy Sheriff's Department

The suspect wanted in connection with a gas theft at a Goleta business earlier this week is in custody at the Santa Barbara County Jail. Sheriff’s deputies arrested 58-year-old Robert Antles of Goleta today, March 18, 2017 at his residence. He is booked on charges of vandalism, petty theft, prowling and a probation violation.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. on March 16, 2017, a male suspect and an unidentified female passenger driving a white utility truck entered the front parking area of Coastal Copy in the 800 block of Ward Drive in Goleta. They parked in the area where the delivery trucks were located. The male suspect retrieved a drill and gas can from his truck and then approached the delivery truck. He then drilled a hole in the gas tank and siphoned gas from the tank into his gas can.

Coastal Copy released video surveillance of the incident to KEYT News which then ran a story on the incident. The next day a Goleta resident who saw the story contacted the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office and identified Antles as a person of interest due the fact he had seen him frequent the Ward Drive area in a white utility truck.

Sheriff’s deputies investigated and tracked the suspect vehicle to a residence in Goleta. Deputies located Antles, who is on probation for numerous counts of burglary, at the residence. The investigation revealed that Antles was the suspect responsible for the theft and felony vandalism.

Due to his probation violation, Antles is being held without bail.

Seriously with the low price roof gas this is "sad."

He must normally go to the station near Costco on the mountain side of the 101 that charges $2.50 more per gallon than any other station in America.

Wonder if he got a mouthful of gasoline. Ugh!

They should make him drink the rest of the tank.
It might teach him the right lesson ..

Not to split hairs, but drilling a drain hole is not siphoning... :P

398 :
Nobody said he drilled a "drain hole".
He most likely drilled a hole ON TOP of the tank so that he wouldn't get spraid with the gas himself and then had to siphon to get the gas out ..

Crawl under a vehicle. Use a battery-operated electric drill to drill a hole in a gas tank. Sounds like a Darwin Award candidate.

Got away with 20$ worth of fuel, ruined a gas tank and prolly traded it for crack. What a tool. Kids stay in school.

The cost to this local business was awful - not just the cost of the gas. They had to pay lots to replace the tank because you can't just patch the hole. Glad the jackass was apprehended.

Darwin Award is totally right. It runs right up there with a video I saw last week where a guy was in a how-to video showing how to replace an overhead interior light, better titled "how not to replace an interior light." The guy said make sure the switch is on and to cross the wires while holding them to "make sure they work" ZAP

58? Looks like 78. I guess that's what sucking gas makes you look like.

He was once an upstanding citizen; gainfully employed, productive, and kind. He has fallen far.
