Here are a few “wild things” I spied on my trail walk on Friday. The flat fungi are ones I have never before seen. The larger ones are approximately 3-4” in diameter. The wildflower is Pholistoma auritum aka Blue fiestaflower. A few days ago here on Edhat we saw a terrific pic of this same species of beetle (Eleodes obscurus), but I just had to show you this little guy trekking across the sandy trail. He was moving at a good pace. Eleodes comes from the Greek for “olive-like.” These beetles are also known as Darkling beetles, Stink beetles, Clown beetles. Lastly, I witnessed a pair of Northern flickers (medium-sized woodpeckers) chasing each other, circling non-stop, through the trees. Too bad I couldn’t get a photo. (I am adding an online photo of a Northern flicker to show you why I found this particular sighting so exhilarating.)
