Santa Barbara History Question

Update by CARPWALKER

Amelia Earhart and Claire Levy

By Edhat Subscriber

My father-in-law was an Amelia Earhart buff. This picture was in his collection. The negative says: Santa Barbara - February 12, 1935. We don't know who the woman with Amelia Earhart is. Does anyone in the Edhat community know anything about her visit here? Thanks for helping satisfy our curiosity!

This is so neat. I wonder if the SB Historical Museum would be able to shed some light? Please update if you find out! :)

You might try and find a Santa Barbara News Press article from the next day to see if there was an article on her visit. Not sure if the library has that info or not.

I have seen several pictures from when she came to Santa Barbara. All the same year. None of them have any connection between the people in the pictures. Always at a distance.

My best guess, my final answer is Nancy Jane Kulp, the actress who played "Miss Jane Hathaway" in the Beverly Hillbillies - she's the only woman I can think of with that kind of a "do".

Audrey Ovington could be a very like person since her dad had an airport and was himself a famous flier.

Except Audrey Ovington would have been 11 years old.

From what I have heard, the NewsPress will not turn their archives over to the public library or any other place for safekeeping and historic preservation. God forbid these archives are lost someday because Wendy is in a bad mood.

Maybe Adelaide Ovington, Audrey's mother?

474P. I'm not sure what you're talking about. Santa Barbara News-Press articles can be found on microfiche at our Main Public Library. I have researched articles/ads, all Santa Barbara N-P stuff, on microfiche at the library.

OP here. I was digging around on the internet and found a few references to Amelia Earhart visiting Earle Ovington. It occured to me that it could be his wife Adelaide. I found a picture of her here:

What do you think?

It's definitely not Audrey Ovington, and as I recall, her mother was a lot shorter than that lady.

How fun! Perhaps Edith Bond the stuntwoman who later helmed the Santa Paula airport? (Can't find a picture of her though to compare).

The organization of women aviators that Amelia Earhart started is still around - The Ninety-Nines. Perhaps you could ask them? Let us know what you find out!

Whoever the mystery lady is - she was tall! Amelia was 5 feet, 8 inches and she towers over her.

Any chance it's her sister Muriel Grace?

Yes I do. This woman name is Claire. The photo was taken in Carpinteria at Shepards Field. We have a similar photo form a different angle. Claire was a family friend.

Audrey Ovington was one-of-a-kind! I met her
toward the end of her life. Shared a scotch or two
with her…so many stories, big laugh, big heart.
She cooked me breakfast twice…"Mistake Eggs"
and "Carpet Eggs"!! (Both delicious)

The woman might be Mary Beatrice Noonan, wife of Fred Noonan Earhart's navigator, as they lived in Santa Barbara.

Do you know what your "family friend's" last name was?

Her name was Claire Levy. Her father owned Levy shoes on State Street. Claire interview Amelia for a school assignment and went on to take flying lessons after their meeting.......

I'm still confused. You mean the woman standing next to Amelia Earhart is really a 14 year old girl? Claire Levy, daughter of Michael A. Levy and future wife of Wally Finger, was born August 2, 1920. That would make her 14 years old when the photo was taken in 1935.
