Local Restaurants Feature Girl Scout Cookies
updated: Mar 19, 2017, 1:00 PM

Source: Girl Scouts of California’s Central Coast

On Saturday, March 11, members of Santa Barbara County Brownie Troop 55406 set up a cookie booth outside Sides Hardware and Shoes, a Brothers restaurant in Los Olivos. The girls sold a variety of cookies, including Peanut Butter Patties, which is the featured dessert this month at Sides restaurant!

805 Living Magazine is highlighting three local restaurants in March who are using Girl Scout cookies in their featured desserts as a tribute to the 100th year of the first known sale of cookies by Girl Scouts.

Sides restaurant in Los Olivos is featuring delicious dark Chocolate and Peanut Butter Patties Panna Cotta—featuring and inspired by Girl Scout Peanut Butter Cookies. (San Ysidro Ranch has also created a mouthwatering Gil Scouts Thin Mints Ice-Cream Cake and Girl Scout Shortbread Cookies are used for the tart and creamy Lemon and Goat Cheese Cheesecake at Lido at Dolphin Bay.)

Pastry Chef Stephanie Jackson of Sides has created a special Peanut Butter Panna Cotta with a salted caramel sauce, topped with peanut butter whipped cream and Girl Scout Peanut Butter Patties as a crunchy crust for her version of this classic dessert.

Girl Scout cookies are made using palm oil.

***Say No to Palm Oil.*** Save endangered species. Stop deforestation.

The rainforests of Indonesia and other equatorial countries are disappearing at a rapid rate, due in large part to the bulldozing of rainforests for the installation of palm oil plantations.

Please boycott products which contain non-sustainably harvested palm oil.

Read labels. Trader Joe's has palm oil in some of its foods, too.

"In September 2011, GSUSA released a new policy on palm oil in Girl Scout cookies to take effect from the 2012-13 cookie season. Amongst the pledges made, the GSUSA announced it will purchase GreenPalm certificates to support the sustainable production of palm oil. The certificates offer a premium price to palm oil producers who are operating within the guidelines for social and environmental responsibility set by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil."

Organic? Humane eggs? It's 2017, time for Girl Scouts to catch up with trends towards more sustainable, green and earth-friendly ingredients. It's the powers that be that need to keep up with the times. For the sake of the kids who sell the cookies!

Are you people really ragging on 9 year old girls over their cookies?

May I suggest a more adult level of animosity?

Take your intentions and energy and focus it on your City Council and don't be such a jerk - give the kid 4 bucks for a box of Thin Mints.

Your Grandmom will eat them if you can't.

How exciting restaurants are using the GS cookies. When three darling girls came to our home with a little wagon full of cookies there was no way I wouldn't buy a few boxes. They didn't last long, too good to hang on to. 474P explained the type palm oil used in GS cookie ingredients so we can get off the bandwagon on that issue. Congratulations Girls on your 100th anniversary of cookie sales.

The cookies taste like they are 100 years old.

522. Agree. A friend and I bought two boxes last year and even though we are both serious sugar/cookie junkies, we hated those cookies. Ugh. Nasty stuff.
