Santa Barbara County Fire responded to a six vehicle accident at 6:26 a.m. Wednesday morning at the intersection of Highway 1 and Firefighter Road just outside Vandenberg Air Force Base in Lompoc.

A total of seven people were injured in what was deemed as a mass casualty incident by the first engine company captain. Vandenberg Fire Department, American Medical Response and California Highway Patrol also responded to the scene.

Of the seven people injured, one reported having major injuries and was transported to Marion Hospital via ground ambulance. Three patients had moderate injuries and two were transported to Marion Hospital while another was transported to Lompoc Hospital. The remaining three patients had minor injuries and all three refused treatment.

Vandenberg Fire responded with two engine companies and a chief officer. Santa Barbara County Fire responded with two engines, battalion chief and a rescue ambulance. American Medical Response also responded with one ambulance. A Calstar helicopter was requested but canceled due to time delay.

California Highway Patrol is on the scene investigating the cause of the accident. Highway 1 is closed in both directions north of Firefighter Road but should be open shortly.

Was the cause severe fog? That is a problem in that part of S.B. County.

170:
Fog is not the cause of anything.
When accidents occur in fog it is because drivers do NOT adapt their driving to the foggy conditions.
Most people drive the same way whether the weather is fine, whether it rains or whether it's foggy.
THAT is the cause of accidents in "bad" weather circumstances ..
