SBUSD Board of Education Selects 5th Board Member

Beginning at 4:10 p.m., Monday, January 9, 2017, the Santa Barbara Unified Board of Education--President
Kate Parker, Vice President Jacqueline Reed, Clerk Wendy Sims-Moten, and Member Laura Capps--met and
interviewed 11 applicants for the current vacancy on the board [one candidate did not appear].
At 9:00 p.m., following completion of the interview process, the board voted 4:0 to appoint Ismael Ulloa to fill
the vacancy. Mr. Ulloa will serve two years, the balance of the term for that position.
Board President Kate Parker said, "We had an excellent group of candidates. We were pleased to meet and
interview several candidates willing to step forward to serve our community's children."
Ismael Ulloa, a longtime resident, is a student program advisor for Santa Barbara City College's Express to
Success program. In this capacity he participates in outreach events for junior high and high school students.
Previously, he worked as a Cal-SOAP director for over four years. He currently serves on the board of
directors for Future Leaders of America.
Ismael Ulloa's chief goal is serving students. He has several years of experience working with district
students and parents in various capacities, including serving as a literacy coach at Santa Barbara High
Mr. Ulloa attended district schools: McKinley, Monroe, and Franklin elementary schools; Santa Barbara Junior
High and Santa Barbara High School.
Board President Kate Parker said, "Our board welcomes Ismael Ulloa and looks forward to adding his voice to
our community's education conversation."
