SBUSD Board of Education Selects 5th Board Member
updated: Jan 10, 2017, 11:29 AM

Source: Santa Barbara Unified School District

Beginning at 4:10 p.m., Monday, January 9, 2017, the Santa Barbara Unified Board of Education--President Kate Parker, Vice President Jacqueline Reed, Clerk Wendy Sims-Moten, and Member Laura Capps--met and interviewed 11 applicants for the current vacancy on the board [one candidate did not appear].

At 9:00 p.m., following completion of the interview process, the board voted 4:0 to appoint Ismael Ulloa to fill the vacancy. Mr. Ulloa will serve two years, the balance of the term for that position.

Board President Kate Parker said, "We had an excellent group of candidates. We were pleased to meet and interview several candidates willing to step forward to serve our community's children."

Ismael Ulloa, a longtime resident, is a student program advisor for Santa Barbara City College's Express to Success program. In this capacity he participates in outreach events for junior high and high school students. Previously, he worked as a Cal-SOAP director for over four years. He currently serves on the board of directors for Future Leaders of America.

Ismael Ulloa's chief goal is serving students. He has several years of experience working with district students and parents in various capacities, including serving as a literacy coach at Santa Barbara High School.

Mr. Ulloa attended district schools: McKinley, Monroe, and Franklin elementary schools; Santa Barbara Junior High and Santa Barbara High School.

Board President Kate Parker said, "Our board welcomes Ismael Ulloa and looks forward to adding his voice to our community's education conversation."
