PRESS RELEASE from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department - (4:17 p.m.)
At 2:25 PM today, The Santa Barbara County Fire Department responded to a report of an aircraft down in the vicinity of mile marker #4 on Figueroa Mountain Road. Our first engine company to arrive on the scene reported that a single engine plane was lodged in an oak tree about 25 feet off of the ground.
The corrected location was mile marker 2 (two miles north of Los Olivos). The pilot, an adult male, was standing on the ground at the time and had only minor physical complaints. There were no other passengers. He declined any medical treatment or transport to the hospital. There was no fire, fuel leak, or hazards created by the crash, other than the fact that the plane is suspended above the ground. The plane itself is an experimental Stits aircraft that was flown from the Santa Ynez airport. The pilot stated that there was some type of engine problem prior to the crash. The Sheriff's Office is the investigating authority and the FAA is enroute.
