Gunshot Sounds Near Fairview
updated: Aug 20, 2014, 8:15 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

I just heard 3 gun shots near the Vons shopping center on Fairview in Goleta. Heard 2 quick shots then a pause and a third shot followed shortly afterwards. We called the police then saw a patrol car a few minutes later but haven't heard anything since.

If this is the Goleta Vons there is a guy who stores old junker cars over there and fires them up at ungodly hours and they always backfire. So most likely just a backfiring jalopy.

109 - Every time someone mentions gunshot we keep hearing about "old junkers backfiring." Do you have evidence for this or an address we can visit to see if this is the case?

Not 109 here, but conversely, do you have evidence that bullets were actually fired anywhere? Assuming, there is no major police response to what would likely be a crime, I'm going to lean that it was something other than bullets being fired.

Firecrackers also sound exactly like gunshots - do you require proof of that also?

It's good to hear Goleta's SO was so quick to respond.

As for proof of the sound's origin... most experienced gun owners know that different firearms have distinct noise characteristics and can tell an engine backfiring from a round discharging.

Most experienced observers of human behavior know that a bias can alter the way perceived information is processed by the brain... therefore unconsciously choosing to see or hear something as something else to fit that bias.

Go talk to the car guy and, in a friendly way, state the situation. He may fire up the cars and show you what backfiring is.

Also echoing 116. Gunshots seem like one of the least likely explanation, it's just more interesting.

Once I called on Gun Shots I heard in the morning and it was someone trying to clear the airport runway. That's what the officer told me. It's better to be safe than sorry.

It's better to be safe than sorry, except when the police become so overwhelmed by false alarms they completely ignore ALL reports of gunfire.

There is a guy on valdez that fires off a very loud car drives thru the neiborhood between 10:00 and 11:00 at night.Wakes up the kids. Who do we call. Also is there a zoning law he now has 6 cars in his driveway and only 2 run.House looks like a automotive shop yard. What recourse do we have.?

Dont patronize people who hear gunshots. We have a wacko neighbor that has threatened several people. He has covert surveillance cameras all along edge of his property facing at the street and neighbors houses. He records everything that goes on with audio! He has a record and several assault charges in the past. He fires his guns at targets in a vacant lot next door and now he has a crossbow to play with. People are finding them in their yards. The sheriff has been called several times. Unfortunately until he actually hurts someone there isn't much they can do. So never underestimate bad wack job neighbors. It could be gunfire...

Everything in this world is not bad, not everyone is your "crazy neighbor"

Anything behind vons in that little rear loading dock can echo/ amplify. Its getting close to the first days of school. kids could be, just being kids.

If you think it's gunshots call don't listen to all the excuses not to call, let the responding officer tell you what it is.

COMMENT 546207 agree helpful negative off topic

Guns are plentiful, easily accessible and totally legal. Firecrackers are illegal and difficult to obtain. Backfiring cars are now very rare. Statistically, gunshot is a logical and valid hypothesis unless there is evidence otherwise.

Everytime someone posts about gunshots someone blames the backfire guy I think he's lived in every neighborhood in the area.

Yeah Roger, I noticed that too. I haven't heard a car backfire in years, but apparently there's some guy with a jalopy (or two) in every neighborhood around town.

@207 It could be a trash truck, a car accident, an electrical transformer, a sonic boom, thunder, construction work or a million other things. Guns are legal, but fireworks are legal too in areas not far from here. Also, shooting a gun in the city limits is much more likely to be met with punishment than lighting off fire crackers. I see kids in my neighborhood with fire crackers every July 4th. Some of the legal ones you can get at grocery stores are pretty loud on their own. I've never seen anyone out there shooting a real gun. I looked for statistics but it's a rather obscure thing to measure and I couldn't find anything. I would also like to know how many people who report hearing gunshots have even ever heard a real gun being shot. Why assume it's anything other than a loud noise? You can still report that and say it sounded like a gunshot. To say you heard a gunshot after hearing a loud explosion-like noise is incredibly presumptuous.

COMMENT 546247 agree helpful negative off topic

2014-08-20 02:15 PM

The gunshots seem to be series of regularly spaced explosions, while firecrackers go off more randomly and often spaced close together. I haven't heard a car backfire 3x in a row in a long time, if ever.

We hear gunshots on the westside every now and then but unless they are from next door, it would be hard to tell the cops where they came from.

Is there any reason to live next to the neighbor from hell? Time to move!

COMMENT 546261 agree helpful negative off topic

2014-08-20 02:49 PM

247: Exactly, firecrackers don't sound like gunshots unless there is just one explosion, and cars don't backfire multiple times.

143: There are no legal firecrackers in this area, and nothing you get at the grocery store sounds remotely like an explosion. Of course you haven't ever seen anyone out there shooting a real gun as that would be completely illegal in almost all circumstances. The real question is, when someone says they heard gunshots, why would you assume they don't know what gunshots sound like? To think you know better when you weren't there is incredibly presumptuous. And why so much effort to come up with other explanations? What is your motivation for trying to downplay or dismiss any report of gunshots?

if you live very near a freeway off ramp you will hear all types of backfires as this is most common during deacceleration

@261 I never assumed that people don't know what gunshots sound like, or that I know better, though I would like to know how many people who report "hearing gunshots" know what a real one sounds like. All I'm saying is that people seem to assume any loud noise they hear is a gunshot even though (as you seem to agree) this is exceedingly unlikely. Op said they heard 3 gunshots, not three sounds that sounded like gunshots. The distinction may be meaningless to you, but I find it interesting.

Whether or not they're legal around here (seems like we're disagreeing on what "this area" means), there are plenty of people lighting them off in my neighborhood every July 4th.

Why so much effort? Because it's good critical thinking. I'm not trying to downplay the report of gunshots, I find people's ability to jump to conclusions and make assumptions without evidence fascinating. I didn't say anything to suggest that the report should be dismissed.

299, as someone who lives a block and a half from a freeway exit I agree wholeheartedly. Two stroke motorcycles are rare these days but often backfire decelerating during their rare appearances. There is one old Saab in our area that is still occasionally on the road and it backfires gently at times. Poorly modified four strove engines also tend to backfire on deceleration and can do do very loudly and repetitively.

Most types of firearms do make a distinct sound and their report is distinguishable by a trained ear. There are a number of other sounds that could cause a report that sounds similar to a gunshot from a wide vairety of relatively harmless sources. Sometime those who are "anti-gun" or vociferous "gun control" advocates characterize these sounds as gunshots. To the poster that had what sounds like an incredibly paranoid neighbor, it is illegal to discharge a firearm within a 1/4 of a mile of an inhabited dwelling or residence in the County and anywhere in the City. The target practice on a vacant lot you described should be reported to law enforcement if it is really occurring.
