Foggy Santa Barbara
updated: Aug 15, 2014, 8:53 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

It's been really foggy in SB lately, especially in the morning. I grew up in Northern California and the fog always reminds me of that. I love looking over the water. What do edhatters enjoy about a foggy Santa Barbara morning?

Getting my windshield washed for free thanks to the heavy mist. Wish I could say the same for the rest of the car.

The smell. And having to wear sweats in the morning, kind of like camping.

The fact that it starts the evening before, which makes for perfect sleeping weather. Very different than someplace like lowland Hawaii where A/C or ceiling fans are oftentimes needed. Yay.

Less appealing to tourists, so they won't talk it up to friends back home, who then won't invest here, which keeps the property values from rising and keeps my rent from being increased.

Love the fog!!!

I love foggy summer mornings! No wind, sunscreen or heat and perfect for biking, hiking, fishing, kayaking, gardening.

The plants get a little refresh and what little water they get lasts longer!

The best part of foggy mornings is the knowledge that at some point, its going to burn off.

I like how quiet it can get and reminds me of snow days. A heck of a lot easier to shovel, too.

To those who think sunscreen is not needed during foggy weather, think again. Clouds and fog only partially block harmful UV rays. Slather on that sunscreen in all weather!!

Love the cool mist of fog . And it has to help the trees/plants at least a little bit during our drought. Not as much a fan when as a teenager my summers in SB were spent delighting in HOT days at the beach in search of the darkest tan possible.
777 made me laugh! I really miss the days of fewer tourists , the cozy little town feel and free parking at all SB beaches.....Sure had fun and a lot more freedom in the good ole days !

"The fog comes on little cat feet. It sits looking over harbor and city on silent haunches and then moves on." Thanks Mr. Sandburg!

My Mom lived here as a teenager. My Mom wanted to live here again. We'd come down here on Dad's vacation and Dad would look for work while Mom and I would hang out. As we came here during summer, and it was foggy or overcast with June Gloom, I could not for the life of me figure out WHAT made my Mom love this place so much!!! :)

Then I came down here for college, and got to see it when the fog burned off. ;) After I graduated, I never left.

I do have to say that the foggy mornings makes it VERY difficult to wake up. It's so peaceful, and the light is muted... it's great for sleeping in on weekends! But awful on work-days, lol! :)

I love being above the fog looking down on it in the city and seeing the other hills sticking up above it like little islands in a sea of cotton candy. I also love the haunting sound of the fog horn.

I love it that after having left the windows open all night to cool the house down I don't have to immediately close everything up to keep the cool inside. I'm staying in bed a little longer & watching the birds hop around in the tree thru my window. It's Sunday morning quiet interrupted only by an occasional chirp or coo :)

758P: I get a towel and wipe off my entire car when there is morning fog. Looks great. I grew up in SF, and especially now, like its coolness.

777, BOY, I'm with you on THAT!!! I wish all the tourists would leave. I want my town back! But sadly, although I'm a native, I'm not a rich native and I'll never be able to afford a home in my own hometown. How unfair is that?

Natures air conditioning works great. I used to hate the fog, but learned to love it after spending 10 minutes in the blast furnace called 'inland empire'. It should be called 'inbred methpyre'. Love the fog now.

Ahhhhh so cool. I'm glad I'm here rather than over the hill in HOT Santa Ynez Valley. Of course, it's the heat over the hills that draws in the marine layer (fog) for us. I like that it makes gardening possible in the morning.
