Fire Department Breathing Apparatus Grant Approved
updated: Aug 08, 2014, 9:47 AM

Source: City of Santa Barbara

On Tuesday, August 5, the Santa Barbara City Council approved the acceptance of a federal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) grant that was applied for by the City Fire Department. The grant, which totals $591,311, will be able to fund the purchase of 85 self contained breathing apparatus units. This is the largest grant ever received by the Fire Department. The Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) currently used by the department, are over twenty years old and will be replaced with the new units.

Firefighters wear the SCBA units when involved with structure fires, vehicle fires, confined space rescue, hazardous material spills or any potential hazardous environment. The SCBA's are a vital part of firefighters "Personal Protective Equipment" or PPE, which allows firefighters to perform in hazardous conditions that would otherwise be untenable.

The Fire Department would like to acknowledge the grant writers, Battalion Chief Michael DePonce and Ron Liechti. Additionally, we would like to thank the office of Congresswoman Lois Capps, specifically, Brenna Barber for their assistance with this process.
