Night Fishing off Carpinteria
updated: Aug 08, 2014, 8:28 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

For the last several days and nights, there has been a large fleet of fishing boats in the exact same spot. From my angle, it looks like they are between Summerland and Carpinteria. They are all lit up tonight and appear to be doing some night fishing. Anyone know what they are after?

Squid boats. They come out of Ventura.

Could be squid fishing. Here are two articles that I just found (as they say, Google is your friend) and thought interesting: http://www.fishwatch.gov/seafood_profiles/species/
squid/species_pages/market_squid.htm

and: http://californiawetfish.org/fishingnews/tag/squid-season/

Squid are great bait for bigger fish, just like mackerel

One thing's sure, when the north bound Panga boats see The Squid Flotilla they'll be forced way out where the Coast Guard can grab them easily.

Heck, this will be far easier than chasing these drug runners all over the hills & down freeways after they land on beaches.

Love fresh squid. The boats are not all from Ventura, but they do off load there as we don't have the facilities here.

Squid have chromatophores and can change their color and pattern. Exquisite skill with camouflage. Intelligent creatures, too. Too bad we can't leave them where they belong.

Squid. They fish at night and are allowed to use bright lights to attract the squid.
