Scam Phone Call Warning
updated: Aug 07, 2014, 10:51 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

I'd like to warn others. I just received a scam call on my cell phone from: (212) 593-1263. The automated voice said it was Heather from "your credit card company" and for the next few hours only I could get a 6.9% interest rate. To take advantage of this special offer, press 1. Needless to say, I hung up.

It would be very good if there were a crackdown on these unwanted calls. I have to answer the phone, as it's partly a business line which has calls from all over the USA.

Now that we use our cell phones almost exclusively vs the home line, we are getting the "robo calls" on a semi-daily basis.

Is there a Do Not Call registering place that works for cell phones?

Right now I assume we're at the mercy of the programmers to keep ahead of the national Do Not Call service. Yes or no?

The "do not call list" is for cell phones as well as land lines.

BUT if you have done business with a company in the last 6 months (I think that's the number), they may disregard your listing.

I thought it was illegal to make unsolicited calls to a cell phone.

Area code 212 is Manhattan, NYC as well as any number of cell phones that could be anywhere.

Everything is illegal. Not very much is enforceable.

The do not call list is for cell phones as well as land lines. However, these telemarketing companies just keep changing phone numbers and using loopholes to keep calling. Even though I don't pick up, I still have to go look at the caller ID to see if it's an actual person or not...a real annoyance.

I recently received a robo call that kept repeating it's message: something about keying in some numbers to opt in or out of whatever. I thought that since it had gone to voice mail, it would time itself out. No. It kept on going. I eventually unplugged the phone from the wall which shut it up. Also, there was no subsequent message recorded on my machine.

I stay on the phone through the message on my parents' phone, and wait for "to opt out press this #. It has helped.

We get a lot of calls at dinner time and never answer it unless we hear a message being made and it is someone we know.

I called the phone company fraud people and they say that you can never tell who is calling you b/c the solicitors have technology that 'spoofs' a number that is NOT theirs.
Your caller ID is fooled and you can't report them by number and until technology for protecting 'US' is developed there is nothing they or we can do.
More importantly, these calls are often from scammers who are trying to get info from you for identity theft, not selling any product!
Beware of even pushing the do not call number. It only encourages them.

We get so many calls from nowhere and other computer calls that we rarely answer the phone, leave us a message. If we know the caller, we answer (we have Cox phone and the caller appears on the TV screen) but if we don't we won't answer. Best bet: get an answering machine, if you recognize the caller, answer it, if not, don't answer, then erase. Saves lots of time and money.
