CAT OF THE WEEK

Daisy

In December 2011, I spotted an Edhat tweet mentioning two 8-year-old kitties whose owner had died and left them homeless. We had just lost the last of our elderly rescue kitties, and for the first time in 22 years, our house was empty. While we weren't sure we were ready, having read that these two siblings were eight years old, my first thought was "Who's going to adopt two middle-aged cats together?" The next day, Daisy and Tiger came to live with us. Many Edhatters followed Daisy and Tiger's story and might remember these two adorable kitties.

[Tigerliger is the shy calico with the triangle nose. Dader Tater is the feisty gray and white tabby.]

Last fall, Daisy was diagnosed with low-grade intestinal lymphoma, and has been responding well to treatment for the past ten months. On a regimen of special food, chemo and meds to manage her symptoms, she soon went into remission, gained back all the weight she had lost, and was back to her old self.

Earlier this month, thought, her appetite waned again and she became lethargic. This time Daisy's tests showed that her low-grade lymphoma had transformed into lymphoblastic -- high-grade -- lymphoma. We have high hopes of seeing her in remission again soon, if we can afford to pay for her new chemo protocol. At an estimated total cost of $7,500 over five months, this is much more than we are prepared to handle, even with access to CARE Credit, which is maxing out soon. It's not easy for us to ask for help, but we don't want sweet Daisy's life to be cut short before her time because we're short of money. We've opened a GoFundMe account to help meet her expenses: http://www.gofundme.com/daisybeatscancer.
