Tall Ship Tour
updated: Aug 05, 2014, 9:00 AM

By Lo 'i

If you missed the Tall ship tour over the weekend, here's an armchair stroll of the 1945 schooner replica built in Denmark. The captain and crew welcomed visitors aboard and answered questions Sat. and late Sun. despite the pleasant, albeit unusual summer drizzle.

Originally built in 1825, the brig Pilgrim was a merchant hide trade vessel until a fire destroyed her some 30 years later. In 1834 the vessel became immortalized by one of her sailors who wrote the novel, "Two Years Before the Mast".

Owned by a non-profit organization, an 18 hour marine educational program is offered in summer to youth volunteers living in CA.

We watched 4 "rig monkeys" climb rope ladders wearing safety harnesses to inspect and straighten out sail lines approximately 98 feet above deck Sun. afternoon! Early Mon. morning the crew motored out of the harbor to set sail for the Channel Islands. The crew sails back to home port at Dana Point before the end of the month.
