August 3, 2014 - Fiesta Festivities

This week has been full of Fiesta fun. Subscribers reminisced on past Old Spanish Days and shared historic photos, photos poured in of Fiesta Pequeña, and the Dedicated Staff attended La Recepción Del Presidente as well as danced the night away at the Celebracion de Los Dignatarios! Despite discussions of how to avoid the downtown madness of Fiesta, many people seem to be enjoying the plethora of dancers, colorful costumes, tasty food, and more that the week-long celebration brings.

The Horse Parade Count has been revealed. With El Desfile Histórico came the annual edhat tradition of counting horses (no mules or donkeys, though). Our local parade is known for being one of the largest equestrian parades in the U.S. and this year there were...461 horses present in the parade! Subscriber Lucky777 guessed 462, making them the winner of the counting contest!

Our Dog of the Week is Finnegan, a water-loving golden doodle. Our Cat of the Week is Jacquelyn, a sleek black cat looking for a home. Our Nonprofit of the Week is the Santa Barbara Audubon Society, an organization that strives to connect people with birds and nature through education, projects and advocacy. Chuck has amusing asterisms from our Santa Barbara Summer skies, David Powdrell shares photos and thoughts about the Carpinteria Arts Center annual Artniture Event, Billy Goodnick is back with a Garden of Ed column that offers up drought coping strategies, and edhatters watch hometown girl and pop superstar Katy Perry's new music video.

---- Edhat Stuff ----------------------------------

COUNT: The horses pranced up and down State Street for the annual Fiesta parade, but how many were there? Find out the answer.

POWDRELL: David Powdrell may only be an accountant but he is passionate about the power of art.

Astronomy: Here are some more amusing asterisms from our Santa Barbara Summer skies.

NON-PROFIT OF THE WEEK: Santa Barbara Audubon Society helps, conserves and restores the earth's natural ecosystems and improves biological diversity, and connects people with birds and nature through education, projects and advocacy.

CAT OF THE WEEK: Meet Jacquelyn, now a well-nourished and purr-fectly healthy cat who would love to find a forever home.

DOG OF THE WEEK: Meet Finnegan, a Santa Barbara boy through and through.
