Gas Leak on Hope Ave.
updated: Jul 30, 2014, 10:47 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

There is a major gas leak on Hope Avenue near Lincolnwood at the construction site for the 9 new houses. It would appear that a line was ruptured while they were tearing out the sidewalk. The noise from the leak is very loud and can be easily heard even with windows closed.

Fire Department is going door to door to advise people to close all their doors and windows but aren't asking people to leave.

I'd get out of the area ASAP if I was there even if the FD says it's OK to stay. Don't want to get San Bruno'd

They are shutting off the gas to some of the houses in the area so they can more accurately check pressure, etc.

They have not stopped the rupture yet though.

Someone may have a very expensive gas bill as a result of this.

The noise has finally stopped and the Firemen are rolling up their hoses. Thank you Gas Company for not letting our houses blow up.

They appear to still have work to do to fix the ruptured line but they seem to have stopped the leak.

I asked the gas company person when they came to hook our gas back up. He told me that whoever caused the damage would normally have to pay for all of the lost gas and for all of the repair costs.

That can't be cheap. The ruptured pipe was a main and putting out a heck of a lot of gas for about 3 hours. They also had about 5 to 10 guys there working on it most of the afternoon.

Thanks, SBHope, good news, and very informative.

I must check out the neighborhood. I think I know the property (may be 398 Hope?); I've treasured it for decades as a funky wonderful home and garden; a stand-out and a hold-out. They grew food too. (I fully understand anyone's need to sell, not criticizing people for it. Elders need a lot of money, kids may be anywhere in the world). I started kindergarten at Monte Vista the year it opened. The corner of Hope & Pueblo Avenue had horses in a pasture. My first boyfriend lived on Lincoln. I'm just old, cranky and nostalgic.

There is a number to call before digging to locate the lines so this doesn't happen. It would appear that wasn't done.

I cannot believe all of that went on just down the street and I never heard a thing! When I went out at dusk I saw no evidence of any problems or the vehicles mentioned. I was wondering about the water thing too. At least two lush lawns in the Lincolnwood area were vandalized with some sort of chemical, that they used to write out drought, although one of them was mispelled. I guess they have their own water supply, and they are keeping things lush and appealing.
