Fiesta History by Flicka
updated: Jul 28, 2014, 11:00 AM

By Flicka

Below is a short picture history of my participation in Fiesta. The 1st is 1946, my cousin and I are in a goat carriage my dad built, Mom grew all the marigolds on it. The 2nd is 1950 or 51, my cousin and I are doing the Mexican Hat Dance (I'm the boy) on the largest float ever in the parade; 90ft, pulled by 14 horses. Turing from Cabrillo onto State the hitch broke, a tow truck came to pull us up State; likely it was the 1st (gas) vehicle ever in the parade (only horses in those days). We danced with Jose Manero's troupe, the rest of his group in the background. The 3rd is 1954, riding my horse Stardust. The 4th is 1956, I rode with the "Santa Barbara Bowl" riders, on Flicka. We rode down the hill behind the stage near the end of the Fiesta Play; Leo Carrillo starred in '56. The zig zag trail was lit with highway flares, we'd gallop around the lawn, between the stage and seating, shouting Viva la Fiesta.Traditionally, the Governor came on opening night, he also was in the parade. The last one shows Leo Carrillo, he was always a big hit; he threw confetti, I have been using paper confetti (biodegradable) for over 30 years in Leo's honor. Thought you might want to use some of this. I'm not riding this year, fractured my right wrist, in a cast up to my elbow. Finally, I'll get to see the parade!
