What Is That Booming Noise?
updated: Jul 28, 2014, 8:46 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

I live off Fairview in Goleta, is that constant loud pounding from the freeway redo? Or a from house, a store? what? it's driving me crazy. It's starts at 8am and boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. Monday-Friday until 5pm.

Can anyone tell me what it is and when it will stop? Can we contact anyone if it's not the freeway ramp project?

Unless someone is doing it for their entertainment past reasonable hours I don't think you can make them stop. It's a nuisance, I know, but it will pass when they have completed their task.

Basically a steam piston pile driver. Loud and annoying but they will stop when the work is complete.

It's from the creek/freeway project. A notice went out I believe in the Monarch Press ( city of Goleta newsletter). It's supposed to be completed in 2017, however, not sure if the pounding is supposed to last that long.

Boomign! Yes- Several notices went out about this phase of construction: Here is the text from the one posted 7/19 here on edhat:

U.S. HIGHWAY 101 GOLETA DRAINAGE PROJECT PILE DRIVING OPERATION

GOLETA - A pile driving operation as part of the Goleta Drainage Project will begin on Monday, July 21. This pile driving operation will continue Monday through Friday for a two week period (July 21 through Aug.1) during the daytime hours from 8 am to 5 pm.

Residents who live in the neighborhoods north of Calle Real can expect this work to be noisy. Residents are encouraged to prepare accordingly for this work.

This pile driving operation is part of the Goleta Drainage Project which will improve the capacity of two large drainage culverts located along Las Vegas Creek and San Pedro Creek at U.S. Highway 101 near Fairview Avenue. Caltrans is the lead agency for this project, in partnership with the Santa Barbara County Flood Control District and support from the City of Goleta. This project is expected to be completed in early 2017. All local businesses in the Fairview Shopping Center remain open for business during the project.

For traffic updates on other state highway projects in Santa Barbara County, motorists can call Caltrans District 5 Public Affairs at 805-568-0858 or visit the District 5 website.

Thank you! Always good to know it will stop.

I thought I was living in the land of Mordor.

I guess they must have some faith that the drought might be over at some point in the future.....

pretty rotten isn't it? I lived next to 101 during expansion to 3 lanes. It will end.

"Plan accordingly" in this case means be out of town on vacation. :-)

Since the noise is so loud, incessant and disturbing to the peace, would anyone mind if I set up my drums to practice in the vicinity? It would provide a little variation in the rhythm and texture, and it would only be for an hour or so. I promise I wont do it until 2017.

It's the sound of progress, but if they are on track it is almost over.

I'm probably the lone freak who doesn't mind that pile driving thump - it's got a good beat to it - bobbing my head to it every chance I get.

OP, I feel for you. Guess the only way to "prepare" is to "repair" to Hawaii or some other place that semi-compares to SB, until the boomedy-boom-boom work is over and done.

Don't you have some vacation time coming? I hope so. Other people make fun, but it must be miserable to have to suffer through the noise and vibration.

Was there ever a flooding problem along there?

COMMENT 540300 agree helpful negative off topic

2014-07-29 07:15 AM

Yes, extreme flooding in that area in late '80's I believe. Lots of homes on the north side of 101 / Carlos Dr were flooded.

I can hear it from the bike path on the other side of Cottage. Windows open with the hot weather and the construction sounds leads to some poor sleep - oh well, hopefully they'll finish up some day.
