Early AM Noises
updated: Jul 23, 2014, 3:37 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

I live in the area of De La Guerra at De La Vina. Over the last few weeks I have been hearing some construction-type noise in the very early mornings, off in the distance, but audible. Last night, however, it was deafening and I was awakened in the very very early morning hours (4am) by what I can only describe as very very loud consistent grinding or mechanical noise, or like a huge construction-type generator, or road working equipment. As I am upstairs, walked to the open window to see if anything was visible, but there was not. The sounds seemed to be echoing in the empty streets, the location was hard to triangulate but seemed to be coming from an area between Carrillo and the beach, and between Santa Barbara and Castillo.

My one thought is that the City would likely NEVER permit work that loud to be conducted at such hours - so either I am mistaken or someone is doing illegal or unpermitted heavy duty work.

My questions are: 1) Were any Edhatters similarly awoken last night by mechanical/construction or similar noise? 2) Do any Edhatters know what the source may be of this noise? And 3) how does one find out what the heck is going on, report it, and try to put a stop to it?

No idea, but not something I'd be happy about. I know that they are doing construction all over town on our main roads. Hope you get some sleep tonight.

Sometimes infrastructure construction takes place at night so it does not interfere with traffic flow during daylight or working hours. Better to interfere with the sleep of the few than the economy of the many.... sorry, didn't mean to be insensitive.

You could call City Public Works 564-5413 to find out. If it's construction, they need a permit for late-night work. I too would want to know what it was. Just glad I'm no longer affected by Cottage infrastructure/sewer/drainage street work. Also lived next door to freeway widening. Pile driving and concrete destruction is a bear.

Been there done that, as I said. I agree with 583. Try a fan, which we'll all want tonight anyway, white noise machine, ear plugs.

It's 97 near my house. Yeah, we'll be living with the fan on high and every window open. :P

Sorry you are dealing with late-night sounds of construction. :P We (currently) don't have that, just living in a hot spot of town.

It was the 1% dismantling what's left of America's hopes and dreams. They're always up to no good... in the dark... out of sight.

I called the police when I heard loud construction going on at Foothill Sansum Clinic, it was 4am and what the heck? They forgot to let neighbors know that cement pouring would begin at 3:00 am until August. That was May.

Thanks everyone. OP here, I am still researching the noise but will post when (or if) I am able to figure out what it is. And yes, it is still continuing. Noticed it starting at 3am last night. Have driven the areas in my neighborhood during the day - and no obvious source was seen.

OP thank you and please let us know if you find out what the noise is. There was a post several months about about a Goleta Hum and the results yielded a wide area of noise complaints. On craigslist in the community section you can search for a reoccurring post from someone about a Goleta Hum. People are noticing noise and are looking for answers. The post on edhat several months ago revealed a widespread noise condition(s) but no concrete source or follow-up was produced. Could be multiple sources. While some posts are anecdotal or dismissive it seems as though many are looking for solutions. Earplugs, sound machines, doctors visits for medications, self medication, suggesting a problem sleeping which is detrimental to health. As for your particular location, if the noise is a local source, it could be from that phone company building. There is a large generator probably for emergency power backup and could probably be used for other reasons.
