Floating Lanterns
updated: Jul 21, 2014, 9:10 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

There are about 10 floating flaming lights that just rose from Downtown SB and floated with the wind to high altitudes. Does anyone know what they're for?

I hope they aren't those floating candle things.

Sounds like those are the lanterns that have candles in them. A lot of people who see them mistake them for a UFO. Pretty dicey timing what with the drought and all.

A public service announcement, letting us know that the population of dingbats and nincompoops is alive and well.

When we were at Catalina earlier this summer, which is in the midst of our same drought, we saw numerous signs informing the public that launching flying lanterns is illegal and a really bad idea.

To prove flames don't cause fire, young people launch candle powered lanterns.
They look up in bewilderment as they float away and say PRETTTY!
Whilst sing that Wizard of Oz song that the scarecrow sung!
No older person with a brain is stupid enough to do this.

they were for remembrance of AJ Herrera who passed away last year

There is a video on Facebook showing them being launched. I hope the authorities catch up with whoever lit these things. What an idiotic way to remember someone's passing. Commit a crime and potentially start a wildfire!

To see candle lanterns safely, watch "Tangled."

Y'all ARE kidding, right? No one--NO ONE--is stupid enough to release those candle lantern things when the entire countryside is tinder-dry. Are they?

Nahhh. No one is that stupid. It must have been something else.

Maybe you wouldn't worry about it 862 but the rest of us with half a brain realize that getting away with a stupid act doesn't necessarily mean forgetting it ever happened.
Punish the idiots that let these go, shouldn't be hard to find as they filmed themselves and posted it online.

By the way 862, how do we know they didn't start a fire?

AJ Herrera was a friend of mine. He was a fine person. His death was a tragedy and left his family and many many friends reeling. I wasn't there for this, nor did I hear about it, but he was a fine man. 864, you're out of line.

When I die don't have a tribute like this throw cow dung at each other..Just because someone is a good person doesn't qualify for a tribute that puts other people at risk..RIP AJ Herrera..

Is this why there was a fire response helicopter hovering over lower State Street and West Beach area late last night /early morning for about 40 minutes?

Maybe they were those disposable little fake votive type lights....still, it's littering. Just because you've got mileage, doesn't mean you have learned a thing. People with a brain have to learn the hard lesson; you can't fix stupid.

Oh boy 923 -It's the flame that makes them rise!
A fake flame and the balloon wouldn't float away.

Naked flame in a paper lantern, what could go wrong!
I despair for the uneducated idiots among us.

Anyone defending the use of these needs to go and watch the video of these being launched - just search AJ Herrera in facebook. They swing wildly around and could have easily be blown down or have tipped and burnt.

For evidence that this happens (as if needed) google -Chinese lantern fire England.

That happened in a WET environment, what the hell is wrong with people? I really hope the authorities pursue these irresponsible fools.

Remembering someone’s life with a selfish and dangerous act like this is completely wrong. Imagine if this had led to a tragedy, and how that would reflect on his memory. Please be careful with any type of fire.

RIP AJ Herrera.
