July 20, 2014 - Magical Sports Camp

David Powdrell shared an important story in his column this week. He photographed the annual Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp at UCSB sponsored by the Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital. Children from Santa Barbara and Ventura County were invited to participate in the week-long event, free of charge and full of fun. Read more from David's perspective here.

Switching gears to the weather for a moment, what is going on up there? It's hot, humid, and cloudy... not the typical Santa Barbara summer we're used to. Normally we expect the June Gloom with some mid 70's, which is fine and dandy. However, lately the sun is at war with the clouds and the moisture is staying up in the sky making everyone sweaty and frizzy. Hey clouds, we could use a little moisture down on the ground ya know? Some subscribers have alluded to the impending El Nino storms headed our way. According to NOAA that doesn't seem to be in the cards for us this year, but we'll keep up the weekly edhat staff rain dance for safe measure, because we care.

Our Dog of the Week is Ernie, a happy guy who is hopeful that his next family is on their way to adopt him. Our Cat of the Week is Shiloh who is quite well read for a cat of her age. She's also up for adoption! Our Non-Profit of the Week is the Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara who aims to enhance the community's awareness and appreciation of architecture. Rosie shares a tasty recipe for pretzel snacks, Lauren indulges in dessert at Louie's, edhatters remember a time when Santa Barbara had too much water, and subscribers share fun videos from around town.

---- Edhat Stuff ----------------------------------

HISTORY: While we're worried about the drought, 47 years ago locals were worried about the flooded airport.

Lauren: Louie's California Bistro serves up some tasty desserts and Lauren is still drooling.

IN THE KITCHEN: Turns out pretzels are not difficult to make at home and are a very welcome snack.

POWDRELL: David saw some magic this week at the Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp at UCSB.

NON-PROFIT OF THE WEEK: The Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara's goal is to enhance our community's awareness and appreciation of architecture and the built environment.

DOG OF THE WEEK: Meet Ernie, a playful pooch with a big heart who is in need of a family to join.

CAT OF THE WEEK: Meet Shiloh, a tabby cat who loves literature and needs a forever home.
