Loud Aircraft
updated: Jul 18, 2014, 4:16 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

Did anyone hear/see the large aircraft above at 4:10 pm? Sounded a bit different than a commercial jet, couldn't get a glimpse of it though. ( I'm on the Mesa)

By Edhat Subscriber:

Just heard an abnormally loud rumble over S.B. Anyone else hear it? Launch @ V.A.F.B?

It shook the heck out of us on Milpas. Looked up when I heard it and all that was there was a long contrail.

Yes, I heard it from La Cumbre Plaza area. Anybody know what kind of airplane it was?

Saw and felt that one - if you looked close there was a second identical plane behind it going much slower.

Yes, below SBCC but I couldn't see anything through the trees. Very loud and rumbling sound.

Heard it here in Montecito. I saw a long contrail and a jet off in the distance, but I don't know if that was the one responsible for the sound. What I saw was heading northwest. But then I heard another loud sound with nothing visible to account for it.

Our place rumbled over in Hidden Valley. Walked outside to see
what it might be and it went quite, as my neighbor asked me what it might be, it happened again. Much louder than the normal plans that pass over on a regular basis.

Same as 774 and MDR here, very loud, booming, very long broad contrail going NW.

My guess would be one or both of the F/A-18s that were at Santa Maria, heading home toward San Diego, and flat-hatting low over the mountains. It didn't sound like something high to me.

Yes, near Cottage; seemed headed toward mts. from the ocean. Amazing sound. started so low and deep; made me wonder if it was earth movement or some bizarre explosion or giant tool, like earth moving equipment.
I did peek out the window, saw a contrail, but didn't investigate more.
At least it was high enough altitude to not shake my walls or make my dogs & cats hide under furniture. the military helicopters are the worst, they rattle the walls & windows and the animals run and hide(they're not getting used to them like I am). This was extremely distinctive and weird; never heard anything like it. I never complain about general aviation, like John Wiley and other pilots I know personally. Those are not noisy!

Thanks OP. I had considered asking. I too would like to know but that's doubtful.

And there was this item earlier....

" There's a private Boeing 757 parked at Atlantic Aviation FBO at Santa Barbara Airport. Does anyone know whose ride it is? "

did this plane leave town? Maybe buzz Hope Ranch?

silly @802! Also heard the deep acoustical sound likely generated by aircraft turbines. Sound bounces absorbs, distorts and reflects through air, people, furniture and buildings. I was in the right spot to feel the reverb of what was likely a passing aircraft. Felt the sound waves absorb and rumble the building I was in as well as vibrating my throat and upper chest! (but saw only contrails) Conditions were right for some of us ground dwellers to experience an acoustic phenomena! Engineers weigh in!

I saw a lone "military fighter" type of jet traversing east to southwest at fairly high altitude at approx. 3:35. I was on a zero gravity lounge chair and noticed the different sort of jet sound which made me notice it. The path seemed unusual to me as well.
Sorry I don't know shapes and types of aircraft, but this was NOT typical civil craft.

I heard and felt it - anyone who didn't must have been either swimming underwater, or in traffic, or wearing a noise-cancelation headset. It was an extremely loud and obnoxious racket, and the perps were probably violating every flight regulation in the book....

Saw this on Reddit:

Rocket or something just passed over SB, coming off the ocean and basically headed up state at. Had a jet following it. Any info? (self.SantaBarbara)

Usually a cruise missile fired from San Nicolas test range, headed to a target at Edwards AFB. They'll chase them with an F/A-18 or similar.

Upper Eastside. Definitely felt it. At first thought some plane may have lost control and crashed nearby, as the sound was so intense and seemed quite close.

Seems like a rocket launch. We watched it arch over Santa Barbara South to North. A smaller contrail next to it
which seemed to disappear rather low in the sky. From Milpas area in looked like it definitely arched up,then over-head and then started arching downward in the distance.
Watched it but had no bins to identify it.

I don't know what you are all smoking but it was not a rocket and was not heading north-south. It was a Boeing 707 size plane flying at extremely low altitude maybe as low as 800 feet and it was heading east along the Santa Barbara coast.

definitely military and very high altitude; thought maybe is was a plane launching a test space vehicle; at least 2 rumbles felt on the eastside

I was at the kids pool with my daughters in the park by SB Junior High, heard the noise and saw the aircraft. It was flying higher than commercial plane, had larger wing than 747's so I don't think it was a rocket. It looked like the wingspan was wider than the jet was long. My instant reaction was that it was a spy plane - maybe U2 type. Pretty sure it had 4 wing based engines. It was very loud & very fast. The plane behind it took twice as long to traverse the same distance (and was at a lower altitude) so I doubt it was following it.
